I’ve mentioned recently in my post Is It Possible To Please Everybody that things have been rather stressful and chaotic for us recently. You can pop over to that post and have a read but in a nutshell, this year has been all about change and one thing we are having to adapt to as a family is dealing with change.
Five months into the year and neither myself or my husband are in the same jobs we started the year in. Mine was by choice, I took a leap and changed my job because I was offered an incredible opportunity that I grabbed with both hands. My husband wasn’t so fortunate. He got made redundant at the end of January and so the first half of this year, for him, has been spent job hunting.
It’s a scary prospect when the main earner in your household is out of work and you feel like the clock is ticking. Each week goes by and still there is no idea what the future is going to hold for you all.
I guess the one thing we learned to do was keep positive. It’s all you can do. I knew he would get a job. He has a wonderful personality and can charm the pants off anyone (not literally!) so I knew it was only a matter of time. But the unknown is a nasty thing and it didn’t help my anxiety throughout the time he was out of work.
Thankfully that time of unease is behind us now, because a few weeks ago he got offered a job and we could relax.
Many years ago, before we met, the Mr was in catering and hospitality and whilst he didn’t love the hours, it was something he was very good at. For the years we have been together we have never been able to go out for a meal without him picking up on little things involving service in restaurants etc. It makes it very useful for restaurant reviews that we do, I can tell you! So this is where he has found himself once more and he is now the Assistant Manager at a local pub and restaurant.

Of course, this doesn’t come without the dodgy hours. In our eleven years together we have been Monday to Friday, nine to fivers and this weekend is the first weekend we have hardly seen each other. It’s weird. Is it bad to say that I almost feel like a single parent at the moment?
It’s hard for me and of course our Little Man, but at the same time, I know that it is hard for him too. He is busy working when he knows his family is at home and he is missing out on quality family time. But the alternative was unemployment – and that just wasn’t and isn’t an option.
So, we are in the process of a little adaptation and it is quite strange. But if it does one thing, it makes you appreciate the time that you do have together. The days off and the holidays – they are all the more precious when you don’t see each other as much as you used to. We are lucky he comes home each night – I could be an army wife and not see him for months on end. So for this much, I am grateful.
Times change and circumstances do too, but it’s how you deal with change and the circumstances that arise because of it that is important. We have each other at the end of the day, and that’s all that matters.
How do you deal with change? Let me know in the comments.

I work unsocial hours too in newspapers, so I know what it’s like. But you do get used to it. Once you get on, that’s what matters! Good luck with all that change. #TriumphantTales

Dealing with change is hard for us all. Take it one step at a time to adapt.
I’m not good with change. It is uncomfortable, so I put it off. However, I have often found in life that a change can help my self esteem as I learn to cope with new challenges. I hope everything settles down for you soon. #TriumphantTales
First off, congratulations to you both on the new jobs! I’m the kind of person that tries to embrace change where possible but I also appreciate how hard that can be at times. You come across as a very positive person and I’m sure that will see you through. #TriumphantTales
We have gone through a lot of change here over the last year, things are just settling down. I have done my best to hold things together, but some days it just doesn’t matter what you do, you feel a bit off. I am sure you will soon get used to your new working schedules.
