If the school holidays have you craving sea air but not a full-blown holiday, a UK coastal town weekend away is one of the easiest ways to get a proper reset without the hassle of flights or long drives. With the new King Charles III Coastal Path now making the entire English, Welsh and Scottish coastline walkable, 2026 is genuinely a good year to explore closer to home.
Whitstable, Kent
Whitstable has long had a reputation as the more understated, grown-up alternative to its livelier neighbour Margate. Known for its oyster beds, weatherboard cottages and a proper working harbour, it’s an easy train ride from London and makes a genuinely relaxing weekend base. Fresh seafood is very much the point here — a plate of oysters by the harbour is close to mandatory.
Southwold, Suffolk
Southwold is classic English seaside: colourful beach huts, a working pier, and the Adnams Brewery for something to do if the weather turns. It’s consistently named among the more affordable coastal towns for a UK weekend away, with budget accommodation available well below what you’d pay at busier resort towns.
Saundersfoot, Pembrokeshire
Over in south-west Wales, Saundersfoot has quietly become one of the most talked-about UK coastal towns in recent rankings — a proper sandy beach, a working harbour, and easy access to the wider Pembrokeshire coast path. It’s less well-known than Tenby just along the coast, which if anything makes it feel like more of a find.
Alnmouth, Northumberland
If you want somewhere genuinely quieter, Alnmouth is a small, colourful village fronted by a huge stretch of golden beach, with a good chance of spotting seals and seabirds along the way. Northumberland’s coastline is consistently underrated for a UK weekend away, mostly because it’s slightly further to reach — which is exactly why it stays quiet.
Scarborough, Yorkshire
Scarborough offers the classic bucket-and-spade seaside experience with genuinely dramatic scenery to go with it — a castle on the headland, two separate bays, and a proper working harbour. It suits a livelier family weekend better than some of the quieter spots on this list.
Making the most of a short coastal break
The real appeal of a UK coastal weekend is how little planning it actually needs — book somewhere with a decent walk along the front, factor in one proper seafood meal, and you’ve got most of what makes these breaks worthwhile.
