We all have our own personalities, and our own individual tastes, weaknesses and strengths. For that reason, it can be important to consider what’s right for you in this world, as what might be worth pursuing for one person may not be so for another. However, it’s also true that many of us have negative personality traits too, as most people do, and these are worth considering.
For instance, it might be that while you’re a hard worker and totally charitable, you feel you might have a love addiction, or a gambling problem getting out of hand. With a little care and attention, working on these issues can be important. Moving forward, however, is often best built not by tearing down the old solely, but by replacing your bad habits with new, good habits, maximizing the best parts of your personality.
You may have heard the adage about the ‘two wolves’ inside every person, one good, one bad, and the one that wins out is the one that you nourish and feed. With that in mind, let’s consider how to tend to your positive personality traits on a daily basis:
Define What’s Important To You
It’s important to define what’s important to you in life. This way, you can be more assertive about what you want, and you can be authentic about getting there. For instance, it’s helpful to be assertive when starting a relationship regarding what your future may look like from your own point of view. This way, you’re more likely to spend time among people who are supporting you on your journey and you on theirs. This helps you flourish appropriately without any forceful need for personal change, as it’s natural to feel actualized in this manner.
Challenge Yourself
We can only really know who we are when we’re put in scenarios that test our capacity and will going forward, and keeping that in mind can be quite healthy. It might encourage you to focus on your dreams, such as getting that novel finished, or heading to dance classes, or getting back in shape after a year of lockdown. Challenge tends to get the best out of us because we need to be better in order to rise to it.
Nourish Your Goodwill
Goodwill is a positive emotion and regard to having. It allows us to want what’s best for us, but what’s best for others too. It can help you feel supported in supporting others, and it will help you feel much less bitter about the things in life you can’t change. That doesn’t mean you have to feel goodwill to everyone and everything, but giving people the benefit of the doubt from time to time can be tremendously helpful in itself. When you nourish your goodwill, you get there all the easier, and you’re much more likely to feel better off for it. The good parts of our personality need to be watered from time to time, after all.
With this advice, we’re sure you’ll feel able to tend to your positive personality quirks, no matter what.
