If you are anything like me, you will be a semi-pro at organising parties for kids. Almost six years into this parenting malarkey, the only kind of party I go to these days is that of the Superhero themed variety with a bit of pass the parcel thrown in. You know, the kind without alcohol. *Shudders*.
I always think that children’s parties should come served with alcohol. I mean you leave with a headache anyway, it may as well be a giggly headache, no?
No, perhaps we should keep those for the adult parties, of which are few and far between for me these days. But when the opportunity does arise, it’s always nice to do something a bit different. So I’ve come up with 7 fun party ideas for adults that doesn’t involve throwing a key into a bowl on the table (before anyone decides to add that in the comments!).
Set up a cocktail bar
Instead of serving up the same old wine and beer options, set up your own cocktail bar. Champagne cocktails, fruit cocktails and even mocktails for those who don’t drink – mix it up and you’ll have something to keep everyone happy! It’s probably best to not let people help themselves though, you could run out of supplies quite quickly and have a very, very ‘happy’ bunch of guests on your hands if they get too keen on becoming the next Tom Cruise!
Play games (that don’t involve musical statues!)
Who says that games are just for kids? Think Giant Jenga. Twister. Cards Against Humanity. All are games that are really good when you get a good bunch of friends together. There will be laughs aplenty and it will keep people busy if you are preparing food at any point. Just remember to take part yourself. Don’t let the hosting take over your enjoyment and participation.
Have a decent party playlist
This is something I can personally spend hours upon hours compiling (any excuse to listen to music!). Every party needs a good playlist! You want to have a mixture of all kinds, with something to please everyone. Think old classics and modern classics. Something to get feet tapping and maybe even bodies swaying. And perhaps even something to get people singing along, which leads us on to my next suggestion…
Who doesn’t love a bit of old skool karaoke? It’s always good for a laugh and these days you don’t even need a proper karaoke machine. Did you know there is Karaoke Channel on iTunes? So now everyone can enjoy pretending to audition for The X Factor without the added expense! You never know, you may even discover a contender for next years series!
Hire a sitter
Do all your friends have kids and always leave early? Hire a sitter and encourage them to stay longer by letting them know you have childcare covered. The kids will enjoy having each other to play with and can even have their own mini party elsewhere in the house. It’s a win-win for everybody!
Set up a DIY photo booth
DIY photo booths are always a success at weddings, so why not set up your own in the corner of your living room? All you need is some kind of stand, an iPad, and an app such as Snap Booth. You can even set up a fun background – a coloured sheet of card would be fine. Remember to provide plenty of props, and guests can entertain themselves all night. They’ll be great to share on Facebook the next day – with their permission of course!
Order in the food
Making nibbles is one thing but preparing a sit-down meal isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. Take everyone’s order and get dialling the nearest takeaway. Relax knowing that someone else is preparing your guest’s favourite, safe in the knowledge that all you have to worry about is loading the dishwasher. This way you won’t miss out on the party games we mentioned earlier.
Have you had a party at home recently? Perhaps you have some more adult party ideas you can add to the list? Let me know in the comments.
