Keeping On Top Of Home Maintenance

Having your own home is a wonderful thing, but obviously, it doesn’t come without its responsibilities. There is nothing worse than finding something wrong somewhere in the house and it being an unexpected expense. The best thing you can do is do regular checks on your house and keep on top of home maintenance. Read on for some helpful tips.

Let’s go outside

If you can do so safely, give your roof a good inspection. You should check for missing or cracked roof tiles or slates. If you find any problems, make sure you replace or fix them as quickly as possible so as to avoid any potential water damage.

Guttering is notorious for getting blocked. Leaves and other debris can fall in all year round. Check them as often as you can to avoid an overflow problem!

When it comes to your patio, you can be forgiven for not noticing it getting dirty over time. It’s not until you wash it that you realise just how grubby it can get. Give it a good jet wash to bring it back to life. Also, consider re-staining any decking or fencing to keep them looking fresh. Everybody wants an attractive garden, after all.

Keep it cosy inside

Check around your bath or shower to make sure there is no missing sealant. If this goes unnoticed it can cause serious water damage in your bathroom and the rooms below. This is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Hire a plumber to check over your boiler. Don’t leave it until the winter months when it’s freezing outside for it to stop working and you left without heat or hot water. Regular boiler services will keep your central heating system in tip-top condition and keep your winters stress free.

If you have a fireplace make sure that you check it for any damage and have it professionally inspected for safety.

If you have a leaky window it could be a sign of rotting woodwork. Or if you have PVC window frames, it’s wise to check the sealant for cracks to avoid leaks.

Mould can be a common problem, especially in older homes. Black mould growing on your walls could be caused by condensation due to either too much moisture in the air and not enough ventilation, or to the structure’s poor thermal qualities. Make sure you investigate – if left untreated it can cause health problems.

By cleaning your carpets every year you could save yourself hundreds of pounds in new carpet. Annual cleaning will help to prevent soil buildup and keep you much healthier by taking away the exposure to bacteria and dirt. It’s even worth cleaning any areas that have heavy traffic more often.

So there we have a go-to list to help you keep on top of your home maintenance. If you make these regular checks, you should be free of unexpected repair bills, safe in the knowledge that your home is in great condition.
