I’ve lost count how many times I have mentioned my personality type here on my blog. If you are a regular reader you will already know that I am an introvert who just loves being at home. This isn’t to say that I’m a hermit who doesn’t ever leave the house – of course, I do, but home for me is my idea of bliss and is my favourite place to be. So what better place to create a sanctuary than the place you love to be more than anywhere else in the world?
What is a sanctuary at home?
A sanctuary is an area of your home dedicated to switching off and unwinding. It’s the one place you can go to in your home to relax after a stressful day and completely forget about all of the things that have been bothering you. Perhaps you have busy days with deadlines galore or you’re a busy Mum running errands all day. Perhaps you’re a working Mum who juggles everything. A sanctuary at home could be the perfect place for you. But how do you make one?
Find your space and make it your own
First of all, you need to find somewhere in your home you can claim as your own, for some of the days, at least. Once you have done that you can get on to the exciting part – decorating and dressing it.
This recent article from Fishpools is a great resource to use as a starting point. It details brilliant ideas that will help incite a sense of calm and inner peace in your new space. Focussing on the most relaxing colours and countless soft fabrics that are available to you.
My personal sanctuary at home
I’ve only very recently become very house proud. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve always had a clean, well-presented house, but it is only within the last twelve months or so that I have taken an extensive interest in home interiors. I always thought my bedroom would be the one place that I would pick as my sanctuary, but surprisingly, it was my living room that I wanted to give my attention to.
I began my living room makeover a couple of years ago when we decorated with colours I’d long been dreaming of. I was clearly well ahead of the game as annoyingly grey has since taken off in a big way. We had new sofas too and slowly but surely as our little boy got older and the toys moved upstairs to his bedroom, we got our living room back for the first time in six years.
I revelled in shopping for soft furnishings. Picking out my favourite curtains, reclining chairs, cushions and throws and now I have the space I have dreamed of for many years. Add to this our new fireplace – something else I have longed for since we moved in, and I am extremely content with what we have achieved. It’s the space I can go to relax after a long day – my sanctuary.
The importance of relaxation
With so much in the press recently about mental health, it’s become apparent that relaxation and time for yourself are of utmost importance. We need to look after ourselves. We need to make time for ourselves and a personal sanctuary at home is a perfect space to create, to help you do this. What are you waiting for?
Have you got a sanctuary at home? Perhaps you want to make one but haven’t known where to start? Let me know in the comments.
