How to Travel Abroad With Children

Many parents are fearful of travelling with their children. So much so that for many, the only option is to stay at home. This is a sad situation to find yourself in and one that is not necessary. Travelling as a family brings so many benefits for you and your children and any inconveniences can be overcome. That’s not to say it won’t be stressful from time to time. What it means, instead, is that travelling can be fun for all concerned, with a small amount of planning and preparation.

With that in mind, here are several tips to make the journey a memorable one, whether you’re about to enjoy Florida holidays or a trip to the Costa del Sol.

What to Pack in Your Hand Luggage

If there are young children in your party, you’ll need to think about keeping them entertained. Puzzle books, games, reading books or magazines, electronic devices, pencils and paper are all small enough to pack into a bag. Bring along some healthy snacks as airport food is not known for being the tastiest. If your children are old enough, they can have their own onboard bag. In case you are worried about how to manage the luggage after arriving at your destination, you can look out for luggage storage services and make a prior reservation.  Suppose you are travelling to Barcelona. In that case, type in luggage storage barcelona to find a suitable and safe place to keep all your belongings. It will also make it easier for you to manage your kids during vacation.

Checking In

Kids are not the most patient of travellers. You might be happy to stand in line when waiting to check-in, but your kids might not be so accommodating. Most airlines now offer online checking in. Try to book your seats beforehand, so you get a better choice. Keep your pushchair with you as long as possible and don’t fold it down until the last minute. Otherwise, you’ll be left carrying not just your hand luggage but your toddler too. While you’re waiting to check-in, play games with them to burn off some of the energy. Also, make sure you visit the toilet and change nappies before boarding!

Boarding the Plane

The excitement level will be reaching the tipping point by now. Take advantage of early boarding if possible as it will allow you to get sorted. Five or ten minutes to settle in will be a godsend. Before you stow your hand luggage in the overhead locker, make sure they have something to do during take-off. Something to eat will also be a good idea because it will give them something else to think about when the plane takes off and helps with their ears popping.

During the Flight

For the next few hours, you’ve got to keep your kids entertained. Just keeping them in the same seat is going to be hard enough. Hopefully, the aircraft crew won’t mind too much if they take a look around every now and again. You also have to be aware of the passengers around you and be careful not to annoy them too much. The activities you’ve brought with you should be enough to keep them occupied. Electronic gadgets are a great way to fill the time but remember to bring some headphones. The passengers in the surrounding seats might not want to listen to the latest kids’ games or Sponge Bob Squarepants for the next two hours.

Now you’ve been given some useful tips you can appreciate that travelling with your children doesn’t have to be a chore. There are so many things you can do to make the journey more interesting for all concerned.
