First Day Of Primary School

The first day of primary school is a huge step in your child’s young life and represents a massive milestone in their development. Most children start primary school around the ages of 5 and 6. This is a momentous occasion for your little one and you as the parent. If your child is making this progression with friends from nursery, the process might feel a bit more natural. But if they’re starting their primary schooling experience alone in a new school, here are some ways to ensure that their nerves and anxiety do not get the best of them.

Work up their confidence

Starting a new primary school can feel very intimidating. The first sight of the primary school building, the first school bus ride, the first contact with schoolmates, teachers, and so on can drain your little one of their confidence. So, you need to ensure that you help them with a good dose of a confidence-boosting shot before the first day.

Start by helping them through their nervous moments and letting them understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel that way. You can even share experiences from your childhood to make them feel better. Also, do your best to be cheerful around them, as that will rub off on their confidence. If your child has anything about them that may affect their confidence, find solutions to these problems. For instance, if your child has anxiety about their traditional braces, try investing in clear braces instead to see if that improves their confidence. You can also work up your child’s confidence by speaking words of positivity into them and letting them repeat those words to themselves.

Help them relax before their first day of school

The last thing you want to do is heighten your child’s anxiety, especially the night before their first day of school. You want to help them relax, and if possible, take their attention off school for that moment. Try creating pleasant family time activities the day or two before their primary school experience begins. It is important to try activities your child will love to keep their minds well engaged.

Take care of your stress and anxiety

Don’t leave yourself out of the picture, as the mood you exhibit will affect how your child’s first day at primary school goes. If you’re stressed out, tired, and ready to snap, chances are those emotions will affect your child and ruin their first day. So, take care of your emotional state and find ways to ease your stress. If that’s not possible, you need to do your best to hide your stress for now.

Become familiar together

In the days leading to their first day, get to know the school with your child. Walk around the school premises together, meet your child’s teachers and other adults working in their class, etc. Doing this will help make their new surroundings more familiar and less uncomfortable. Also, recognising the faces they’ve already met will make your child feel less nervous.
