When you have only just become a parent and become a parent of not one but two babies, the whole world can look daunting. You have just had a boy and a girl, 1 year apart. Your family is growing rapidly and you would like to figure out how to handle two babies at once. Many parents feel as if they need to unlearn and relearn some things now that their family dynamic has shifted. And for those that don’t have both parents, the mother or father taking care of the babies alone, can seem impossibly difficult. But who said parenting was going to be easy? You will need to juggle and take on new challenges. We’re here to help!
Two at a time
When you do things for one baby, try to do them for the other as well. This means whenever it’s bath time for one baby, make it bath time for the other baby too. Even though you might have a girl and a boy, and they might be one year apart, it’s best to just keep it simple for your own sake. Why? Well, keeping track of who has been changed, who needs to be fed, who should take a nap and who needs to be burped, is sometimes all too much. So, two at a time is the rule. When one baby is being fed, his or her sibling needs to be fed at the same time. Don’t split meal times or nap times.
Going out
Of course, every parent that has two babies needs to have a Double Baby Buggy. You can select buggies that are in parallel, or in-line. This means that one buggy has your babies side by side and the other is one in front of the other. There are pros and cons to the in-line that we list below.
In-line
Pros:
The buggy is slimmer and therefore, better for cities and towns.
It’s also much easier to control.
They pack up much easier, so they are better for travelling.
Cons:
One baby will not be able to look out as his or her view is blocked by the other seat in front.
They are sometimes top-heavy. As one child can sit higher than the other, it’s best to put the larger child in the bottom seat.
There might not be enough room for one baby
Space and time
The thing is, because as parents we find it easier to keep two babies together all the time, this can become quite annoying for them. So giving them some time apart is very valuable to their growth. You should have them in the same room, and just allow one to lie on the bed and another to lie on the floor. Being away from each other, kicking and stretching without touching the other can be very good for their sense of individualism.
First-timer parents are always facing an uphill battle. But it’s one that is worth fighting and winning. You’ll become much better parents when you can take on these challenges and give your children a great start in life.
