4 ways to make parenthood less stressful

Even if your children are angels most of the time, parenting can be difficult. Juggling a million things at once and making sure your family is fed, clothed, and watered isn’t always straightforward and can leave you feeling somewhat stressed.

If you can relate, then there are many things you can do that can help to make life as a parent a little easier. Here are 4 ways to make parenthood less stressful.

Pick your battles

This may sound easier than it is, but if you can master it, it could make your life a lot calmer and far less stressful. If you regularly get on at your children about things that they have or haven’t done, before flying off the handle or getting worked up, consider whether the issue in question is that big of a big deal.

You may find that there are things you are stressing out about that, in the grand scheme of things, don’t matter too much. Pick your battles, and you could completely change the dynamic of your household.

Implement family house rules

Having set rules that everyone in the household must follow can make parenting a breeze. Sit down as a family and discuss the rules that you intend to implement. These may include what is and isn’t considered acceptable behaviour, chores that must be completed each week, or how family members should treat each other. Ask the kids to join in with their thoughts and write them all down. Once agreed, place your rules somewhere that everyone can see them agree as a family to abide by them.

When children are asked for their opinion, they are more likely to adhere to any restrictions and rules that have been set.

Stay calm

If you find that you are regularly letting things get to you and feel your stress levels building, try to find ways to manage it. Many people find that going for a run or doing some other form of exercise is a great way to deal with stress. For others, meditating with a Buddhist prayer necklace allows them to regain focus and better channel their energies. You may even find that taking a few deep breaths and counting to 60 is enough to reduce your stress levels.

Everyone is different, so find what works for you and practice it whenever you feel like things are overwhelming you. Over time you will find the same situations a lot easier to cope with as you will have a mechanism in place to deal with it.

Ask for help

If you are struggling with childcare from time to time, speak to friends who have kids the same age, and establish whether you could perhaps help each other out. You may be able to structure things so that you each take turns picking the kids up or dropping them off at school.

If you have family nearby, let them spend a bit of time with the kids and take a much-needed and well-deserved break.
