“There’s no place like home”. We first heard Dorothy say this with three clicks of her ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz which was released 80 years ago this year! It’s quite unbelievable that the famous quote has been around for so long, but on hearing this news, it got me thinking about what home really means to me.
My safe place
It’s no secret that I am a self-confessed introvert and so for me, my home is my safe place. A typical introvert will choose to spend cosy nights in with a blanket and film over booze-fuelled nights out in the local pub. Don’t get me wrong, I have had my time partaking in the latter, but these days, I just love to be at home. It’s where I am most comfortable.
There is something about being in my own home with my own things around me. It brings comfort and it’s where I am my happiest and most confident. We all love going on holiday, of course, we do, but there is nothing like coming home, is there? There is nothing like that first night’s sleep in your own bed after being away. It’s one of the best feelings ever.
When we are younger we all dream about having our own place and it can sometimes take a long time to get the home you’ve always wanted. It’s only been in recent years that I have really started to take pride in my home in terms of its decoration, style and furnishing. I have discovered what I like and I have been having a wonderful time, making our home our own.
Memories are made of this
I do believe a lot of this comes with age. When we are younger, a lot of us live for the weekends and for socialising with friends. Since having our son, home is more important than ever before.
Home is where memories are made. It’s home that we first brought our little man to when he was less than 24 hours old. It’s where we paced the hallway during sleepless nights in the early days. It’s where he later took his first steps and later still when he discovered the magic of Father Christmas for the first time. These precious memories are all made at home and if that doesn’t make home a special place, then I don’t know what does.
Home is where the heart is
I will always feel like I have a second home at my parent’s house. I say second home, but of course, it was my first home. I have the fondest of memories growing up there and that is how I want it to be for my little boy as he grows up in this big bad world. I want him to think of home as the one place he can be safe and be completely comfortable and be himself. I want him to always feel the same warmth in our home as I still feel when I walk into my parent’s house now. I want it to forever feel like home for him.
But then this got me thinking again. Is it the bricks and the mortar that make it feel like home? Is it the cosy soft furnishings and pretty wallpaper that make it welcoming? Or is it the love that greets you when you walk in through the door?
One thing is certain, little Dorothy was right 80 years ago and I do hope Toto listened. There really is no place like home.

Love this and so true. Im also a real home bird, if someone invites me out these days I have an internal meltdown! Nothing better than walking through your front door after a busy day, pjs on, kids around you – there’s no place like home! #triumphanttales
Dorothy was right. Home is my sanctuary too Jaki. Although I am an extrovert I need intimacy and therefore I am an extrovert within my family and struggle (scared witless) about making friends and being social with strangers. So home is precious and safe environment for me. I love that my children always travel back home – and our dogs are a very big part of that xx

I am a total home-body. It’s my safe haven, my pride and joy and yes, the place where I have made so many beautiful memories. It’s my first home, both of my children have been brought up here and it’s testament to my 16 year long marriage so far too x #TriumphantTales
I’m a great lover of home and just being alone. However I seem to spend all my time cleaning and tidying it to create the right space to relax in, then just end up in the same place or having a lie down, I need to address this balance #triumphanttales

I also prefer being at home rather than ‘out out’. For us being together was always home as we fell out of love with our house a long time ago. Now we are in our new home and the kids are older were all pouring out hearts into it! It’s a special feeling #triumphanttales
