Fight the Fight: Secrets of a Person with Strong Willpower

Seeing someone who has strong willpower can make you feel like they were born with it and you weren’t, but this is not true. Anyone who has willpower has secret strategies that work for them. It can be difficult to have willpower when you can’t see the goal ahead, so making goals and thinking ahead is important. Anyone can learn to have strong willpower. Whether you are trying to make it in your career, opening a new business or recovering from a bad relationship, here are seven helpful secrets you can follow to have stronger willpower.

Set Goals – Write Them Down

By setting goals, you can have something big to work towards. Setting goals will help to improve your willpower. When we really want something, we will be more likely to succeed. Both long and short-term goals are important. Short-term goals help you get to the next level. Long-term goals help you to have something to keep striving for. Strong willpower comes from having something to accomplish. No matter what your goal is, it can be essential to set goals to be successful. Keep your goals written down somewhere you will see them. Seeing them will be a reminder to stick to them.

Believe in Yourself that You Can Accomplish Anything

Sometimes believing in yourself seems easier said than done. Come up with a mantra or just keep repeating, “I believe in myself and know I can accomplish this.” This way, when you are doubting yourself, you will replace those doubts with positive words of encouragement. If you are recovering from an addiction, it can be easy to relapse because the result seems so far away. Write your mantra down, keep it somewhere you see it every day, and eventually, you will learn to live by it without doubting yourself.

Test Your Limits

No one ever accomplished anything great by staying within their comfort zone. You might have to step out of the boundaries and test your limits to get where you want to be in the long run. It can be scary at first, but once you see how successful you can be when you set goals and not limits, you won’t want to stop. Do something you have never done before, go somewhere new, and meet new people. Even though you will feel uncomfortable at first, doing these things can lead you in a direction you never knew about.

Love Yourself No Matter What

Those with strong willpower love themselves through the good and the bad. They know that not everything can always go their way. If you or someone you know is struggling with addiction, loving yourself first is very important. By itself, willpower is not enough to overcome addiction, but you can get started working on your goals by always loving yourself first.

Seek Advice from Others

There will be other people who have what you want. Instead of judging them, seek advice from them. It can be very easy to think or speak ill of them because they have what you want. Don’t be so quick to judge. Instead, talk to them and see what got them where they are today. There is nothing wrong with seeking help from others. In fact, those with strong willpower probably got there by learning from other people. It is impossible to get through life without the help of others. Those who refuse to seek help or advice will usually not be successful.

Let Go of Control

Sometimes we want to control things so much that we get stuck. While you do have control over some things, you should learn to let go of things you do not have control over. It is important not to waste energy on things you don’t have control of. You can’t control what other people do, but you can control what you do. If you’ve tried your best at an interview, be proud of yourself, but realize you can’t control the outcome. By letting go of what you cannot control, you will have more mental energy for the things you can control.

Resist Temptation

Temptation is something that can prevent you from being successful, and no matter who you are, you will run into it at one time or another. You might be tempted to stay in bed longer, have “just one” drink, or do something irresponsible that could prohibit you from reaching your goals. For those moments where temptation is difficult to resist, have something to replace it. Instead of having that drink, go for a run. When you want to stay in bed, think about your goal for the day and what you need to do. Remind yourself of your long-term goals. This way, you can overcome temptation and have stronger willpower.

No matter what you are trying to accomplish in life, you, too, can develop stronger willpower. Once you realize this, you will regain strong self-confidence and be able to succeed with whatever your goals are. By fighting the fight and working hard, your willpower can be improved to help you live a happier and healthier life.
