The Important Spring Checklist for Your Pet

Spring is finally upon us and that means warmer weather, new life and beautiful flowers. With everything changing as the new season sets in, it’s important to make sure your pets are ready and protected from the potential risks that can come with the new season. From excess sun exposure to keeping hydrated, there are lots of things that many people overlook during the spring, but it’s essential to have all areas covered to keep your pet happy and healthy. Of course, you know the importance of feeding your dog with a good-quality food, such as Dr Marty pet food, but let’s now explore some of the less obvious things you should be doing for your four-legged friend now that spring is here.

Treatments for Fleas and Ticks

Many people choose to stop any flea and tick treatments throughout the winter, however, now that the warmer weather is back it’s important to start those treatments again. Keeping your pet protected from fleas and ticks is vital, as ticks are carriers of diseases that can often be a danger to your pet. When it comes to fleas, the last thing you want is an infestation in your home. Fleas jump and cling to soft furnishings so it can be costly and time-consuming to get rid of them properly. Take a look at the flea and tick treatments available from brands including Frontline, as these are trusted and can be purchased from trusted online retailers like Petwell. If you’re unsure about which product is right for your pet, be sure to ask for some advice before you make your purchase just to be on the safe side.

A Fresh Trim

Having long hair in the hot weather can be extremely uncomfortable and the same applies to our pets. Long coats can result in your dog becoming hot much quicker, so it’s always beneficial to get them booked in at the groomers during spring. Having a haircut will help to keep your pet cool and feeling fresh, whilst also keeping them looking neat and tidy. Another important thing to have checked when at the groomers is the length of your pets’ nails, you want to ensure they’re in good condition and at a good length too.

Change Walk Times

You and your pet may have a routine for venturing out into the great outdoors, but during spring and summer, it’s beneficial to change your schedule a little. The best time to be heading out with your pet is early in the morning and late afternoon to evening time. You want to avoid walking your pet between the hours of 1 pm and 4 pm, as these are the hottest hours of the day and this could cause your pet to overheat and become dehydrated. You’ll also find that the pavements could be too hot and cause your pet’s pads to blister and become uncomfortable.

Plenty of Hydration

Keeping your pet hydrated and cool during spring and summer is always a priority. Whether it’s making sure they have constant access to water bowls or giving them a hose down with the hosepipe every now and then, you want to keep your pets at a happy temperature so that they don’t overheat or dehydrate. There are some great products available now that are designed to soak up water and keep your pets cool whilst they play with them. You can also find cooling mats that keep your pets cool when they lay on them, which are ideal for placing in the garden when your pets want a little fresh air.
