recharge on a Sunday

I love Sundays, and they are a special kind of day. It’s like that perfect day between the crazy busy week that was and the recharge for the new one ahead. I am sure for so many of us, Sundays are the days you spend time catching up on all the things you missed during the week and getting things ready for the next week’s activities. But how about we start making Sundays a dedicated day to self-care, a day just for you to recharge, reset, and pack on what Monday might bring with a fresh mindset and a calm heart?

Here are some great ideas for turning your Sundays into a rest and recharge day. They can help you create a relaxing routine that suits you because taking care of yourself isn’t just nice—it’s necessary.

A Slow Morning

The beauty of a Sunday is that there’s no rush. Your morning can start slow; instead of jumping out of bed, give yourself permission to just linger. You can stay under the covers longer, even with the kids, and enjoy the warm cosiness. Maybe you are rather the type who just can’t resist the morning sun and let it gently pull you out of bed.

Maybe you could start the day with a simple activity like a nice cup of tea or coffee enjoyed in silence (hopefully). For some, it could be doing some stretches to wake up the body and mind. The most important part is to ease into your day and let your mind and body slowly flow from sleep to wakefulness.

Mindful Reading

After settling into your morning routine, you could spend some time reading if you enjoy it. And no, scrolling through your phone or catching up on socials is not reading. I mean, like diving into a good book, something that pulls you away from the stresses of everyday life and transports you somewhere else entirely.

Reading can be incredibly relaxing, and it is also a way to give your mind a little vacation from constantly being stimulated by screens and notifications. Maybe you like a good novel, some poetry, or even a self-help book, but the act of reading itself can be a form of meditation. You have to be present in the moment, fully engaged with the words on the page.

You might have never been a reader, but would you like to start? Think about what kind of stories or topics really captivate you, but whatever it is, let yourself get lost in it for a while. There’s no better way to spend a lazy Sunday morning.

Meditation

As your morning slowly progresses, you could set some time aside for meditation. This could be your first time, so just know that meditation doesn’t have to be complicated or intimidating; it’s simply about giving your mind a chance to rest and reset. Start small; even just five or ten minutes can make a big difference.

Where possible, try to find a quiet, comfortable spot where you won’t be disturbed. You could sit or even lie down and close your eyes, then just focus on your breathing. 1,2,3, inhale deeply, then exhale slowly 1,2,3, and just let your thoughts come and go without judgement or attachment.

There are some great apps to help with guided meditations; they are useful, especially if you are not sure where to start. Just be gentle with yourself because there’s no right or wrong way to meditate. It’s a way to clear out all the mental clutter, leaving you with a more peaceful mind.

Light Mental Exercises

Being mentally charged after a meditation session is the best time to do some light mental exercises. No, I am not talking about anything too taxing, only something gentle to stimulate your brain while still keeping things super relaxed. And what better way to do that than with a game of Sudoku? It is one of those games that are challenging and soothing at the same time, and it requires focus and logic, but only in a way that’s enjoyable and not stressful.

If Sudoku isn’t your thing, then there are plenty of other light mental exercises to try, like crosswords, word searches, or even a simple jigsaw puzzle, as it can give you that same sense of calm focus. It is all about using your brain in a way that relaxes you and not stresses you out.

A Walk

As the day progresses, how about taking a break from indoor activities and heading outside for a walk in nature? Have you noticed that there is just something incredibly therapeutic about being in nature  and its surroundings with its sights and sounds?

If you do live near a park, beach, or a nice neighbourhood, take a stroll outside and absorb yourself in your surroundings while listening to nature, its birds singing, the breeze on your skin, and the colours and textures of the environment that surrounds you.

Walking in nature is a form of moving meditation, and it allows you to connect with the present moment and clear your mind of clutter.

You may be lucky enough to have access to a more secluded natural area, which can be even better because there’s nothing like the peace and quiet of a forest or a riverside trail to help you feel grounded and centred. But even a simple walk around the block can be enough to lift your mood and refresh your energy for the next week.

Take a Soothing Bath

If you are ready for some more relaxation, take a warm bath; there is nothing like it. It’s the perfect way to unwind and soothe both your body and mind, especially if you add some Epsom salts, essential oils, or some bubble bath to make it even more special. Close your eyes and breathe in deeply while the warmth of the water melts away any tension in your muscles and releases all your stress and anxiety.

I enjoy reading in the bath, and maybe it’s your thing, too. But just let your mind drift to a peaceful place where you find serenity. Remember, there is no need to fill every moment with activity; just be.

Journaling: Reflect and Reset

As your Sunday starts to wind down, there are a few more things you can do to relax, like journaling. Journaling is a great way to process your inner thoughts and emotions, setting a positive tone for the week that lies ahead.

No, you don’t have to be a writer to enjoy journaling. Just grab a notebook and write down whatever comes to mind, anything you feel. You could make a list of things you’re grateful for, reflect on the past week, or even write down your hopes for the future. Writing can be incredibly therapeutic and also help you clear your mind and focus on what’s important at this very moment.

So, if you’re not sure what to write about, try starting with a simple sentence like, “Today, I felt…” or “This week, I learned…”. Write freely without judgement; that is the goal, and this is your safe space to express yourself and find clarity on paper.

Conclusion

As Sunday evening comes to an end, you should feel relaxed, refreshed, and ready to take on the week because you actually spent the day relaxing and recharging. Investing in your present self is investing in your future self, and you deserve to recharge your batteries.
