You may have plans to move to a new house and is trying to figure out the best ways to move all your belonging. Transporting your fish tank can be a tricky ordeal. Simply dumping a good volume of the water and refilling the tank later is not a good option for the fish. It requires careful planning and specific, yet basic supplies to help you safely move your fish tank to your new place of residence. Here are seven easy steps that can help you to properly move your fish tank.
Step 1: Get Necessary Supplies Ready
Before starting the process, you want to ensure that you have all the supplies needed. Take the time to tick off your checklist and organize your supplies to avoid scrambling when it’s time to get things started. Some of the items you’ll need include, a fish net, new and clean 5 gallon buckets, insulating foam sheet, syphon hose, duct tapes, plastic baggies, packing paper, bubble wrap and moving boxes.
Step 2: Prepare Your fish to Be Moved
Stop feeding your fish 24-48 hours prior to moving day to ensure that the fish waste has passed ahead of moving. Don’t be alarmed because fish can live for up to a week without food. For short-distance move (less than an hour) putting your fish in plastic baggies along with water from the tank and placing them in a sturdy case or a cooler will suffice. Large, clean buckets filled with water from the tank are more appropriate for 3-4 large fish and long-distance moves. To prevent spillage, tape the lid shut.
Step 3: Clean Fish Tank
Unplug the fish tank and remove plants and accessories attached to it. Place the plants in a bucket of tank water and clean and dry accessories before packing them away using bubble wrap and paper. Take special care to pack up tank equipment and keep filter damp in a sealed container. It is also important to learn how to properly care for your aquarium and its inhabitants.
Step 4: Drain Tank Water
Use a syphon hose for larger tanks and save as much of the tank water as you can so you can have an adequate amount to refill the fish tank and limit health risks to the fish. Seal the lid of the 5-gallon buckets of tank water with duct tape for transport.
Step 5: Pack the Aquarium
After removing the lid, wrap the tank in bubble wrap and pack separately in a box, preferably. Be sure to use insulating foam to fill in any gaps around the tank to minimize shifting of the tank, and prevent scratching by stuffing the tank with paper or foam
Step 6: Transporting the Tank
The best option is to use your personal vehicle to transport the tank and fish in order to keep them safe and secure. If using a mover, emphasize the fragility of the tank and the need for extra care during transportation. Compare movers to find the right one for the job.
Step 7: Set up the Tank and Add Fish
Start setting up the tank as soon as you’re at your new place. Ensure that the PH balance, temperature, ammonia and chlorine levels are back to the normal condition before placing the fish in the tank, carefully scooping them out of the bucket using a net.
