The dynamic of our lives today is pretty hectic. There is much more stress nowadays than it used to be. We are all in desperate need of a quiet place where we can decompress and reach our inner balance; a place where we can recharge our batteries and get ready for the challenges of the next day.
For many of us, that place is our bedroom. And if you think about it – it should be! It is one room that nobody else enters, where we are free to be completely ourselves and to put down the walls around us. There you have your 7-8 hours of complete peace, so why not turn that room into your sleeping oasis? Why not use every minute of it to a maximum? The decor and the conditions we create in our bedroom greatly affect the quality of our sleep, so here’s what you can do:
1. Block the noise
Noise can distract you from falling asleep or it can even wake you up in the middle of the night. Many times, the source of the noise is out of your control (loud neighbours or heavy traffic), so you need to have something to block that noise. You can use earplugs but first, try with more elegant solutions. You can use a sound machine that emits relaxing sounds, like a breeze blowing through the trees or gentle rain. That way, your brain will concentrate on that sound instead of the outside noise. Playing relaxing music until you fall asleep can also be helpful.
2. Clear the clutter
A cluttered room leads to a cluttered mind. Many people can’t fall asleep if their bedroom is in a mess. Put the clothes back in the wardrobe, clear out the mess on the bedside table, and ditch the treadmill. Your bedroom should be free of clutter, which means it’s free of potential distractions. Your mind needs to be clear and “empty”, so it makes perfect sense for your bedroom to be like that, too.

3. Keep the bedroom cool
Even though people live in different countries, where the daily temperatures differ a lot, it doesn’t mean that people need different temperatures in their bedroom while sleeping. For example, even if it’s really cold outside during the day, most people in the UK will prefer sleeping in a cold bedroom. The reason behind this is that your body’s temperature slightly drops before you go to sleep, meaning you should help this process by keeping the bedroom cool. So, adjust the thermometer before you go to sleep – you don’t need the heat. It will only make you restless.
4. The lighting
In order get into a deep, relaxing sleep, you have to be in total darkness. For some people, even the light from the full moon can be annoying. You need to allow your body to produce melatonin, a substance that sets your internal clock for sleeping and tells you that it’s time to go to bed. Heavy curtains or blackout blinds will protect you from the outside light and help your brain produce melatonin. In countries like Australia, people pay attention to what type of windows they have. For example, it’s popular to have custom house window tinting in Brisbane and some other cities in order to darken the bedroom. In other words, even the bedside lamps can be distracting if you’re trying to fall asleep, so protect yourself from light, both from the outside and inside.
5. The decor
Deep, relaxing sleep is important for everybody, especially for children. If you have kids, help them sleep tight by not going too far with the decor in their bedroom. Many young parents get carried away with decorations and colourful walls, which only keeps the kids awake at night. You will provide your kids with a good night’s sleep if you have storage space for dolls and other toys so that they are out of your kids’ sight in the evening. In case you painted the room in bright colours, keep the room completely dark so that the walls don’t distract them. The only thing by their beds should be a red lamp. That way, even if they turn it on during the night, it won’t wake them up completely.
6. The right mattress and pillow
If you notice you wake up feeling stiff or your mattress has lumps, holes or sags, it’s time to replace it. Most mattresses last for about 10 years. The good ones are not cheap but bear in mind that you will spend a third of your life sleeping on it, so buy the best one you can afford and that suits your preferences. The same goes for the pillow. If you constantly need to fluff your pillow, then get a new one. Your neck and shoulders will be able to tell the difference.

Final words
Your sleeping oasis is not that hard to achieve. Spend some time turning your bedroom into it, and you’ll notice how your days and nights feel better.
