I sometimes have to stop and try and work out how I have got to the age that I am. I am now past my mid-thirties and I’m hurtling towards forty (ouch!) faster than I would like, but in my head, I swear I am still twentysomething. I don’t know where the time has gone and at times I forget that I am a responsible adult – is that bad of me?
Certainly, over the years I have learnt many lessons and I would like to think I am at the stage now that I know the basics of how to adult properly. I still can’t help but snigger as I write that – I mean to any of us ever really grow up?
There are certain things that we have to do in life that is part and parcel of being an adult. Once you have these nailed, you can go about your way of being a kid at heart. Let’s take a look at these tips on adulting, shall we?
Get financially savvy
If there was one thing that I wish they had taught when I was at school, it’s money management. Maybe if they had then I wouldn’t have ended up with debt issues at an early age. I know so many people who did the same thing the minute they were allowed credit. Thankfully many years have gone by since then and I can confidently say that I am pretty good when it comes to managing the budget in the house. It was certainly all learned through experience.
One of the things that we should be doing as adults is to compare energy tariffs often, we can quite easily plod along in our merry little way paying the bills, but it’s worth taking time out to see whether we can be saving money. Pennies make pounds, after all, money saved on energy bills can be used elsewhere. It’s the same as car insurance – this is something that I will compare each year to make sure that I’m not wasting money. It’s worth taking ten minutes out of your day if it means you can save yourself some money.
Have healthy, grown-up relationships
We will all come across different kinds of relationships as we go through adulthood and we should all handle them in a mature manner. A healthy relationship of any kind should all revolve around respect. You should admit your mistakes when you know you are wrong, and accept responsibility for your behaviour and attitude. In your relationships, it’s very important to have trust too. Without trust, you don’t have a good foundation for a decent relationship. Support each other’s choices and be understanding whilst offering encouragement. Always be a good friend. You never know when you might need a good friend in the future.
Know how to get a job
There will come a time when you will need to get a job, this is inevitable. Unless of course, you were lucky enough to hit the jackpot on your sixteenth birthday and get yourself a winning lottery ticket! Going for interviews are very much a part of adult life. It’s good to know how to get to the point where you are being offered an interview. Get yourself a decent CV and keep it updated regularly – you never know when you might stumble across that dream job. You want to be ready to apply for it with a moment’s notice.
When, not if, you get to the interview, make sure you have done your research on the company. By doing this it shows that you’re serious about the position and helps you prepare questions you might have about the company, the position, any benefits, and the day-to-day. Even if your questions are answered during the interview, it looks good to come prepared.
Look after yourself
You don’t need me to tell you that we only get one shot at this thing called life. As a responsible adult, we should be looking after ourselves. No one is saying you can’t enjoy a couple of beers and a takeaway every now and again but it’s important to make sure these things are in moderation and not excess. When you look after number one, then you can look out for those around you better. Whether this is your children, your partner or your parents. You can’t do this effectively if you are worried about yourself. Make sure you go to doctors and dentist appointments. Go for any screenings you are invited to. Don’t put these things off because you are worried, it’s too easy to regret something you haven’t done.
Be kind
If there is one thing I have taught my little boy and I continue to instil in him every day, that is to be kind. There is enough hurt and upset in the world and by simply being kind you can change somebody’s day. It takes no effort and makes you a wonderful person. If you can offer kindness you can offer the world. Be a good person, be kind.
It is true that this list is only a fraction in size of what it could be, or indeed should be. But if we were to list everything we would fill the internet with one blog post! So tell me, what would you add to the list? Let me know in the comments.

Good post! We still struggle with the financial one…no idea where it all goes. #Triumphanttales
All so very true but Be Kind is number 1. The older I get the more I see people’s bad behavior towards others. It seems to be a growing trend. We need to to get back to that simple thought. #TriumphantTales
Yes the tip on being financially savvy would have been my biggest one. If you don’t know how to handle money and save as an adult then you won’t get too far. It makes all the difference when it comes to buying a house especially. I learned that in the last year when we applied for a mortgage and saw how much attention the bank pays to your savings history. It really pays to be careful with money! #triumphanttales
A great list Jaki! The financial really should be taught at school! I think we’ve all done it. Now I have a love of spreadsheets! #TriumphantTales
I wish I had been taught money management too. I think it is something everyone should be taught.
