What Flowers Should You Plant in Winter?

When you think of winter, chances are that you don’t always think about your garden. However, the truth is that your garden is just as active in the winter as it is in the spring and summer, it is just in an entirely different way.

Sure, with the cold weather you might not feel like sitting outside, even on something as stylish as Sloane and Sons Garden Benches, but that doesn’t mean that there is nothing that you can do in your garden during the colder months.

In fact, there are some plants and flowers that actually need to be planted during the winter months. To help inspire you to indulge in a spot of winter gardening, we have put together some of the flowers that are going to need to be planted during the winter months.

Sternbergia

Believe it or not, these plants actually enjoy harsher weathers and sharper drainage, which means that these bulbs are ideal for planting during the winter months. They are best planted in groups as this will have the most impact on the colour and look of your garden and, if you want them to thrive as best as possible, then try to plant them somewhere that the sun will hit them as much as possible.

Cyclamen Hederifolium

Whilst this particular flower is known as one that blooms during autumn, you can actually plant this bright and colourful plant during the winter too. They have pink blooms and silver looking leaves and are ideal for growing in a shaded area as they will offer a beautiful splash of colour. It is important to remember that these particular plants usually are dormant during the summer months, before becoming active in the autumn and winter.

Begonia

Hanging baskets are a popular addition to any outside space and thankfully if they are taken care of then they can last throughout the entire winter months. Begonias are a popular flower to plant in a hanging basket and they are known to add bright colour to even the shadiest of patios. The flowers usually last until November time, but as they are a hardy plant, you can try and plant them during the winter.

Snowdrops

It can’t be a winter countdown without mentioning the classic winter flower, the snowdrop. The snowdrop not only looks beautiful, but it smells beautiful too. Not only this, but the planting of this particular flower couldn’t be easier. In fact, all you need to do is scatter the seeds, before planting them wherever they land. This is because this flower looks best when it is naturally led out.

Winter Aconite

Buttercups are a popular summer flower, however, during the winter months, these vibrant yellow blooms do a disappearing act. If you miss the colour of buttercups during winter, then you might want to consider planting winter aconite. One of the happiest plants out there, these flowers love living in moist soil as well as shaded areas, which makes them ideal growers for the winter.

Gladiolus Murielae

One of the more elegant flowers, this particular fragrant and long-stemmed flower does look beautiful in any garden space. It usually prefers being planted and growing during the autumn months, but that is not to say that it is not going to last through the winter months if you do want to plant it.

Crocuses

Another autumn plant that can work in the winter is crocuses. These plants look amazing as they burst through the fallen leaves and create a blanket of colour that really brings your garden to life. They also come in a range of colours that are ideal for your own tastes. It is important to remember that Crocuses are not fans of heavy rain (which is usually part and parcel of the winter months) so you might want to try and plant them underneath a tree or in another protected part of the garden.

As you can see, during the winter months your garden doesn’t have to lie dormant. Of course, there are going to be fewer things to plant, but you can still flex your green fingers and enjoy your outdoor space. All before getting busy during spring and summer.
