Mastering The Art Of Sweeping Up

You might be forgiven for thinking there isn’t much to sweeping a floor; it looks like such a simple task. You just pick up a broom and sweep some dirt into a dustpan, right? Sure, anyone can do it, but then the question becomes: can they do it well? Like so many seemingly easy tasks, mastering the art of sweeping up has its own special techniques. These can take things to a higher level of cleanliness while making the job easier for the one pushing the broom around!

If you truly want to master the art of sweeping up with your floor brush or boom then there are some steps you should follow that will prevent the dust, dirt, and other debris from simply being pushed around the room from one corner to another, or being tossed up into the air just to settle back down once the sweeping is done.

The following are some master cleaning tips on how to sweep floors effectively!

Start At the Top

The first sweeping tip doesn’t even require a brush or broom, but a feather duster and damp cloth to clean up and wipe down the dust from countertops and furniture surfaces. When you are cleaning house it’s always best to start from the top and work your way down, because if you sweep the floors first then the dust you disturb when wiping down counters will fall down onto the floor, so you will have to sweep it up again! Sweeping should be saved as one of the last things you do before finishing up your housecleaning with vacuuming and mopping.

Sweep Towards You From The Corners

Always start from the corners of the room and work your way outwards when sweeping. Be sure to sweep by bringing the broom towards you, not by pushing it away from you, sweeping along in your direction while walking backwards. These techniques prevent you from cornering yourself in.

It also helps to make small piles of dirt as you go, especially if the dust and debris has grown a bit thick from neglect. When you are done, go back and sweep the piles into the pan. If you make one big dirt pile, then the chances are high that some loose dust might end up in the air only to settle back onto the floor again.

Don’t Get the Broom Wet

Always keep the broom dry as you sweep. Wet bristles lose their suppleness and can cause scratching damage to your floor, as well as damaging the bristles themselves, shortening the lifespan of your broom. If the bristles do happen to get wet while sweeping, then make sure to let them dry upside down to prevent damaging them. You should avoid getting your broom wet unless you are cleaning it. After you are done washing your broom, Place it upside down, bristles up in the air so it will dry thoroughly.

The last thing to do is try to keep a regular housecleaning and sweeping schedule so you and your broom don’t have to work as hard!
