The holidays are definitely not the most wonderful time of the year for some people. There are many reasons why one may not be feeling so jolly this time. Depression and anxiety can intensify during the holidays, and there are a few reasons for that.
It may be due to seasonal affective disorder, where you’re feeling depressed due to the weather and the shorter days. It could be due to you worrying about spending the holidays with the families. If you have a job that’s harder during the holiday season, this could be a culprit as well. Here are some ways you can improve your mental health this holiday season.
Stay Healthy
Often, people will exercise less and eat more. This can make you more depressed. While it’s okay to have some cookies, some eggnog, and a glass of cheer, do it in moderation. Go to a gym if you have to. Bundle up and run outside. This can help keep your mental health up.
Get Plenty of Rest
Some people have a harder time sleeping during the holidays. This may be due to the changing seasons affecting their melatonin production. Melatonin supplements and good sleep hygiene can help. See a doctor if you are having trouble sleeping.
Don’t Overwork Yourself
If you work retail, don’t take on more than you can handle. It’s okay to tell your boss that you can’t work those extra days. Working nonstop without a break is rarely worth it. While you shouldn’t skip work until you’re fired, don’t take on too much, either.
Don’t Overspend
Often, our holiday stress is due to the fact that we spend too much or worry about getting gifts for everyone. Budget for yourself and don’t spend more than you can handle. There are other ways to show your friends and family that you care this holiday season.
Figure Out Your Family
If you feel stressed because of meeting up with your family for the holidays, try figuring out the exact reason why you feel this way. If there is a toxic family member or family drama that always happens, figure out steps to avoid it.
Also, if your family is too much, you’re obligated to take a break from them. Find a way you can excuse yourself. Don’t feel like you should stay because they’re family. Your mental health is much more important in the long run.
Seek Help
Remember that a therapist is here for the holidays. If you need a little extra holiday therapy, they’re here for you. They can help you figure out what’s causing the winter blues and then give you ways to treat it. If your holiday anxiety is because of family, perhaps they can help you with that problem through family therapy.
Don’t let the holidays be a time of stress. Instead, let it be a time of celebration for another great year. Get the help you need and enjoy yourself no matter the situation.
