Humans have been adorning themselves in jewellery for thousands of years, and that includes earrings. There are two main types of earrings, the first type being one that clips onto the ear, usually at the earlobe. The second type is attached to the ear through a piercing, where a small hoop is made, a metal pin passes through the hole.
It is important to note that there are many different places on your ear that you can pierce, and there are articles you can find online that will show all of the different types of ear piercings that there are.
Here are some of the many different types of earrings.
Stud Earrings
The stud earring looks like it is floating in place on the wearer’s ears. The stud earring is slipped through the piercing, and a metal clasp is attached to the back to keep the jewellery in place. These can be made from a variety of different metals including gold and silver. John Greed has a wide selection of Pandora earrings you can choose from, with prices to suit most budgets.
Drop Earrings
A drop earring is worn on a piercing to the lower earlobe, and will generally feature a gemstone which drops down from the ear on a chain or a hoop. The length of the drop can vary, with some coming close to shoulder level. These earrings can be quite heavy, especially the chandelier style which branches out into multiple levels with a few gemstones.
Dangle Earrings

Dangle Earrings are very similar to drop, as they are worn on the same area of the earlobe, and they drop down. However, a dangle earring does not have to contain a gemstone, and they come in a wide assortment of different designs, colours, and lengths. These are usually worn using a hook to connect them to the earlobe.
Hoop Earrings
Hoop earrings come in a variety of different sizes and are usually round or semi-circular. These earrings are typically made from hollow tubing, with a thin wire piercing through the ear and connecting to the other side of the ear, to help to reduce the amount of weight on the ear, as some hoops can be massive. Hoop earrings come in a variety of different materials, these types of earrings draw attention and shoe off the fact that the ear is pierced.
Barbell Earrings

Barbell earrings get their name from the similarity they have to a barbell. You will usually find an orb at either end of the barbell, and one end the orb can be removed to allow you to pass it through the piercing in your ear. The orb is then reattached and the earring is then secure on the ear.
An Ear Thread
An Ear Thread has other names as well such as Earthreader, a Threader, or an Ear String. With this type of earring, a thin chain will be threaded through the ear piercing and left to dangle on both sides. You find that some people will also add beads or other trinkets to them which makes them dangle down, similar to Drop and Dangle Earrings.
These are some of the most popular types of earrings that people wear all over the world.
