The Summer holidays are almost upon us and no doubt many parents are wondering how they will fill the days and weeks. London is always a good idea and is such a wonderful place for children to see. But it can also fill even the most confident parent with dread. But fear not, here are some tips for visiting London with the kids that will hopefully set your mind at ease and give you the confidence to go for it.
Take a train
Kids don’t always travel light. You may have packed everything that you need and when you add children and pushchairs to the scenario, all of a sudden it’s feeling like mission impossible to get anywhere. Make life easier by getting a train. It will make it so much more of an experience before the day has even started. If you are relatively local to the city you can even get a direct train into the city – for example, you can travel from Bedford to London St Pancras directly. This is much easier than battling traffic and congestion charges. It’s a no-brainer.
Shop Savvy
Snacking can be an expensive habit when travelling with kids. For the journey there and when you come home, make sure you’ve stocked up on supermarket snacks so you don’t get overcharged unnecessarily. The children will need fuelling for their busy day ahead so it’s always best to be prepared.

London doesn’t always come cheap. But the wonderful news is the museums are free which can give you a full day of activities for next to nothing. Be sure to check out a list of London’s museums before you go – plan ahead so you know where to find all the free action!
It’s also free to walk the Millenium Bridge. The bridge is a stunning steel suspension bridge that is strictly for pedestrians. Get a great sense of London’s layout and have fun people-watching all at the same time.
Packing tips for London
There is a lot of walking involved in London. If your children aren’t good at walking long distances, consider taking a lightweight stroller so they can get a quick sleep or even just some rest time. Older children shouldn’t struggle as much, but it’s best to warn them it will be a long day so comfortable shoes are a must for everybody.
London can be beautiful in the Summer, but it is the UK after all and can be very unpredictable at the best of times. Invest in a packable raincoat. They fold up small but can be pulled out when they are needed for those unexpected London rain showers.
Visiting London with the kids doesn’t have to be a scary thought. With a bit of preparation and research, it can be a day to remember.
