Finding trusted baby development information can seem daunting for first-time mums. It can feel like you are all alone but that is simply not true. Literally millions, no billions of people in the world today have gone through this same experience.
Once your reticular activator, which is the part of your brain that helps you search out information that you need for your current situation while discarding information that you don’t need, locks onto anything baby, you will soon discover that the information you need is merely a click, a page turn or a conversation away.
Continue reading as we help you navigate your way through the mountain of information about babies and their development.
Friends And Family
They say we can choose our friends but we can’t choose our family, and yet our family knows us in ways that the best of friends just can’t. Ask your mum, she has been through this. Ask your dad, he might surprise you with his wisdom. Ask your brothers and sisters, they might have pulled your pigtails when you were young, but they may have a different way of looking at things which will help you on your journey.
If you have a friend that you can phone at 2 am and ask for a favour, you are very blessed. Talk to that friend and ask him/her questions. He/she will not judge you and you can ask them all the weird and wonderful things that have been playing on your mind.
Online Sources
Oh, how far the internet has come today and how amazing it truly is. With one search you will have tonnes of information through online articles and blogs. Use it – it’s only a click away. Something reassuring is that most articles that pop up first are articles that many people have read and in most case are trustworthy. But don’t just read one. Read a few until you find that one that satisfies your gut feeling.
Support Groups
There are many support groups in Australia that you can join to help you on your journey of parenthood. These groups are there to give you trusted information regarding your baby’s development as well as support for you as a parent. Here you can share your experiences and feelings in a safe environment. The other parents will help with coping strategies and information that you just can’t find on the internet or in books because it brings with it the human touch. And after all, everyone needs some basic grown-up human interaction every once in a while.
Healthcare Providers
These wonderful people have a real calling and vocation as they dedicate their lives to helping other people. Whether it’s your general practitioner, your obstetrician, nurse or midwife, they are in the trenches every day. Because of that, they know their stuff. Ask them the questions that have been nagging you. Their wealth of information is there to be mined.
Books
There are books about disciplining your toddler, what becoming a new father entails, potty training and breastfeeding – the list goes on and on. Reading a book is also a great way to interrupt your own thoughts. Also, you can make notes in the margins and read it when you have a moment to spare or in the doctors’ office.
The Information Is Out There
As you can see, there is a wealth of information there for you to devour regarding parenthood and so many reliable sources from which to choose. But it is your responsibility to ask questions, to join a support group and to read. And in doing so you are going to realise, you’ve got this.
