All long term relationships can hit a stumbling block from time to time, nothing is ever always perfect. The important thing is how you handle the stumbling block.
You’ve no doubt heard a million times that communication is key when it comes to maintaining a successful romantic relationship. When the communication stops, it can be easy to drift apart. The secret is to be aware of the issue. Today we’re going to give some insight and provide you with four ways to improve communication in your relationships.
Schedule time to talk
You always need to be prepared to make time for each other. You need to be available to engage in a conversation that lasts longer than 15 minutes and do it without the company of the television, photo or computer screen. Get outside, go for a meal together if you can where there is more chance of a one to one communication.
Don’t be scared of silence
Lots of people feel the need to always be in conversation when it comes to relationships. Communication isn’t always about the conversation, let’s not get the two confused. If you’re always trying to fill quiet gaps with small talk you’re more likely to not get around to discussing the important things.
Silence should be viewed as a time for reflection. Think about things before you say them, and think about what has been said to you. This is a healthy way to have a conversation. It shows that you are serious and not jumping in with both feet without thinking.
On top of this, the times of silence can be used for you to observe your partner’s body language. Posture, eyes, smile and demeanour will always communicate to you. This is probably one of the biggest insights of all. Be aware of your own body language too. How you communicate without talking could be having an impact on your relationships without you even realising.
Take a step back before responding negatively
We all get annoyed about things from time to time but it’s how you respond to it that can make all the difference. Frustration and impatience can come out of us in a number of ways and usually, this will be negative. But really, what is the point in getting angry about it? It will be nothing but counterproductive and likely cause more of an issue than it really needs to.
Take time out, breathe, count to ten and really think about what it is that you’re feeling frustrated about. Then approach it in a calm manner.
Think about counselling
If you have been trying these things and the situation isn’t improving, it could well be worth thinking about a few counselling sessions to get the wheels of communication turning again. Sometimes, you just need a little guidance in the right direction. Involving a non-bias third party could be just the thing that’s required to coax out thoughts and feelings that have never surfaced before. If you’re concerned that this could come at a cost, then have a look for free online counselling.
