When you give a gift to someone, it’s usually because you care about that person and want them to feel appreciated. You’ve put a lot of thought into their present, and your wrapping should reflect that concern.
That doesn’t mean you need to spend a fortune on gift bags or fancy wrapping paper. There are other ways to make your gifts stand out, such as using colorful and appropriate holiday gift stickers and tags.
Ready to level up your gift-wrapping game? Follow these 5 professional wrapping tips for impressively packaged presents every time.
1. Choose the Right Materials
You already know it’s probably not the best idea to use old Christmas wrapping paper to cover a summer birthday present. But the right paper isn’t just about the design. Your material should be of good quality so that it doesn’t rip into jagged edges as you cut it. Thicker paper creases and holds better. Sharp scissors reduce the chance of shredding, too. Seal the edges with double-sided transparent tape.
2. Use Bright Colors
White and black can fit nearly any occasion, but if you want to wrap your gift so it stands out, use bright colors. Bold blues, reds, pinks, purples, and other strong hues are impactful without any extra embellishments, but they also look good with various patterns, like polka dots.
3. Skip the Pre-Made Bows
It’s easy to find a cheap package of pre-made bows in assorted colors around the holidays. However, if you want your gift to look like you put thought into wrapping it, opt for a thick ribbon made from real cloth material, like gingham or satin. Enhance the bow with a holiday-appropriate embellishment, such as a wooden heart on Valentine’s Day or a stick of cinnamon for Christmas.
4. Add a Colorful Tag
Unless multiple people are giving and receiving gifts, as happens at Christmas, it can be tempting to wrap the gift and hand it directly to the recipient without a tag. Yet, this small touch can be a thoughtful one if you do it right. Look for pre-made holiday stickers or tags that match the theme of the wrapping paper and embellishment. Use a calligraphy pen or another decorative writing utensil to label the gift neatly and with style. If you don’t know how to write calligraphy, there are helpful DIY instructions to guide you. The key to a beautiful tag with stylish writing is to use a pointed pen and practice, practice, practice before you write on the tag!
5. Use Bags Sparingly
In some cases, gift wrap isn’t feasible. For example, if your gift is bulky and wrapping it would not look clean and neat, a gift bag would be a better option. In those situations, insert the gift into the bottom of the bag, and then use matching or complementary tissue paper to cover the present, tucking some of the paper so that it peeks over the edge of the bag’s opening. Use gift bags as the exception rather than the rule. If it’s possible to gift wrap, take the extra few minutes to do so, and your gifts will stand out.
