What Is an Air Compressor?

What Is an Air Compressor?

Put simply, an air compressor converts the power produced by a motor into compressed air. This air is then used to power tools and devices. Air is compressed and forced into a fixed-size space, being compressed more and more until it reaches its limit. This limit shuts the compressor off. Motors on the compressor drive a pump. The pump pulls in air and forces it into the tank.

Compressors also always feature a cooling mechanism, as they can become very hot. This is because compressing air, or any type of gas, causes that gas to increase in temperature (this is how diesel engines work – the diesel fuel is compressed enough to make it ignite). For air compressors, heat is a byproduct that isn’t needed so it must be cooled down, usually using either water or oil.

Choosing a Compressor – Knowing the Specs

When deciding what compressor to buy, you first need to think about what you’re using it for and how that impacts your decision. Reading reviews might help. Try this one of the Senco PC1010. Then, you need to understand what different compressor specifications mean. The power of the motor, for example, is measured in horsepower. This tells you how fast your compressor can generate stored air.

If you’re using your compressor for big projects, you also need to make a note of the size of the tank. This is a measurement, usually in litres, that lets you know how much air the tank can hold at any one time. The third and final most important specification to understand is how many cubic feet of air your compressor can output per minute. This can be impacted by atmosphere and humidity, so it’s worth spending time getting your head around it before you buy.

Use of Air Compressors

Air compressors can be used for DIY projects at home, on construction sites, and even in auto garages. They are hugely versatile, easy to use, and environmentally friendly. Don’t be intimidated. It’s easy once you get the hang of it!

Compressors can be used to pump up tires and air mattresses, blowing away debris and leaves, powering nail and staple guns, drills, and other power tools, for painting walls, and much more. They turn air into a powerful force – sometimes, even more, powerful than electricity. Compressors are sometimes referred to as pneumatic compressors. This is because any object powered by compressed air can be referred to as pneumatic. The concept is similar to hydraulics, except hydraulic devices are powered by compressed liquids.

Taking Care of Your Compressor

Like all tools and machinery, taking good care of your compressor is essential to keep it safe to use and help it live a long and useful life. You must have a small maintenance kit with you at all times, consider using Rockland luggage to carry everything you need. There are a few things you should check before each use, including the filter, cleaning out any moisture, and that all hoses and valves are connected.

Don’t forget to read the instruction manual! They are included for a reason, and reading yours will help you get to grips with your new compressor quickly and safely.
