Home renovations are complicated affairs that always take longer than predicted. Whether it’s a DIY job or one that involves loads of different contractors, the chances are you’ll have lots of construction and mess littering your home for weeks – if not months.

Thankfully you can call upon all manner of things to help make this renovation less stressful, but have you ever considered renting a self-storage unit? It’s something that might’ve crossed your mind if you’ve spent time on Reddit or other home renovation forums, as people swear by them as a useful tool in this scenario. Despite some initial doubt, it turns out that self-storage comes in handy in a few very crucial ways.

Keep Furniture & Belongings Safe From Damage

Let’s imagine you’re designing a space to call home and want to renovate your living room. You may need to repaint the walls, rip up the flooring, knock down some walls and who knows what else. All the while, you’ve got an expensive sofa, a one-of-a-kind coffee table, and plenty of other great pieces in this space.

There’s a solid chance that you could damage all of these items during renovations, either because they’re in the way or you knock them on things while trying to move them around.

That’s one of the big reasons home renovation enthusiasts love self-storage; it gives you a place to store any valuables while you revamp the room they’re in. They stay safe and covered, so there’s no risk of anything bad happening.

Free Up Valuable Space In Your Home

Alright, couldn’t you just move those items into a different room?

You could – but it would take up valuable space in your home. Using self-storage units means you can store your entire living room in a unit without taking up space in your bedroom, dining room, kitchen or anywhere else.

In turn, this makes it easier to live through your renovation as you don’t feel totally cramped with so much stuff in every room. Plus, moving stuff out of your house temporarily means there’s more room for things like DIY tools, boxes full of new items, and so on.

Helps The Project Go Faster

There’s another big side effect of freeing up space in your home during a renovation: it makes everything go faster.

It’s easier for builders (or yourself) to move things in and out of the house because there aren’t random pieces of furniture in the way. If you have contractors working on the renovation, they can keep their tools and materials on-site instead of needing to get them from a van or truck.

Having an empty room (or rooms) to work on without dealing with extra clutter elsewhere in your house means the renovation doesn’t have to be as stressful as you first thought. Granted, you could have a similar effect by storing things in your garage, and that’s a fair idea – but only if you have one that’s big enough, and you don’t use it regularly. Otherwise, self-storage is a neat little tool to keep in your arsenal when you need extra space and want to protect your belongings.
