We appear to have found ourselves in the midst of a national lockdown and there will be many people around the country that will be tearing their hair out at the very thought of having nothing to do to fill their time. I thought I would put together a list of new hobbies to try at home, that doesn’t have to cost you a small fortune. Read on to be inspired and maybe you’ll find your new passion.
Reading
How many of us say that we are too tired to read, or we don’t have enough time? Well, guess what? Now is as good a time as any. Download that book that you’ve been wanting to read all this time and then when you’ve finished that one, download the next one. Join an online book club to give your reading even more of a purpose. Reading is a wonderful way to exercise the mind. The teachers in my son’s school always say ‘reading is the key to everything’ and they’re really not wrong.
Running (or another type of exercise)
So we are allowed out of the house to take part in one form of exercise each day. This is a privilege in my opinion and one that should be made use of if done in the correct way, ensuring social distancing rules are adhered to. I used to run and I actually got quite good at it but then for some reason (probably down to time!), I stopped. I see this as the perfect opportunity to dig out my trainers and try and get fit again. Not only will I not be getting even half of my daily steps in by being at home all day, but I also won’t be getting any time to myself and the introvert in me won’t be able to cope with that. Exercise the body and the mind and go for a run, or a walk or a cycle. But get out and get the fresh air when you can.
Picking Locks
Before the police start tagging you for a potential crook, know that learning to pick locks is a practical skill that can be useful for numerous situations. When faced with situations that require breaking out of locked establishments during emergencies, lockpicking can be the do-or-die skill to learn. There are a wide variety of lockpick sets, from a standard kit to lockpick guns that vary according to the type of lock.
Photography
Taking photos is not only fun, but they are a great way to keep hold of memories. In years to come, this time of our lives will be talked about in history lessons and just imagine you have actual photos to show your grandchildren of the time you were in lockdown. There are free photography tutorials and applications online similar to Photoshop, available to anyone. You can start on your phone and then if you really like it, consider treating yourself to a nice bit of kit such as one of the (Professional) Full Frame Mirrorless Cameras. When you can get out and about, the world will be your oyster – oh the pictures you will take!
Writing
Believe it or not, this little corner of the internet started as a hobby. It has grown somewhat over the years which I am very grateful of. Writing is one of the cheapest ways to have fun. Whether you are blogging or trying to write a book, there are many different ways to enjoy writing. You don’t even need a computer. Do it the old fashioned way and grab a pen and paper to get started.
These are just a handful of things you can try your hand at. Hopefully, I have given you the inspiration you needed to think about researching new hobbies to do in these coming weeks. Leave some ideas in the comments if you have some more suggestions. I’d love to read them and I’m sure others would too.
Above all, no matter how you spend your time over the next few weeks, please stay safe.
