Moving house is considered one of the most stressful life events a person can go through, so if you’re feeling it right now, know that you’re not alone. From choosing a removal company to sorting through the piles of stuff that’s accumulated over the years, there’s a tremendous amount to think about.
To keep you from running around like a headless chicken – or to at least mitigate it a little bit – here are a few tips.
Start the Packing Process Nice and Early
One of the most important things for having a move that’s as stress-free as possible is starting early. The majority of the panic comes from rushing, so get as much organised as you can a good six weeks prior.
You won’t be able to organise absolutely everything, but there’s plenty you can do – packing being the big one. Start with the room you use the least, and begin organising the space using labelled boxes. Three will do: one for things you want to keep, another for items to sell or donate, and a third for stuff that can go straight in the bin or recycling. You’ll hit a wall at some point where you’re just left with things you’re still using, but this relieves you of a huge burden in the few days leading up to moving.
Pack an Essentials Box for Your First Night
It’s common to be so focused on moving out that you neglect to think about moving in, so it’s a great idea to pack yourself an essentials box to cover your first night.
It’s unlikely you’ll have the energy to fully unpack once you arrive, so a box containing basic toiletries and kitchen items, medications, a change of clothes, some bedding, and anything else you deem necessary will go a long way. It may even be that you need a few nights spent like this, so plan ahead and make sure that you have everything to make the new space comfortable.
Use Self-Storage for Things You’re Unsure What to Do With
It may be the case that not everything fits into those boxes you’re using to sort each room – and maybe quite literally.
It’s common to have one or two things that are quite large that you’d like to keep, but either can’t fit in the moving van or you don’t know where you’ll place them in your new home (this usually happens if you’re downsizing).
For this problem, self-storage can be a lifesaver. Rather than having to get rid of something that you’d like to keep, you can store it safely and securely in a temperature-controlled container until you’ve figured out what to do with it. Most companies have a range of available time scales and unit sizes for you to pick from, and the sites are monitored twenty-four hours a day, seven days per week.
Wrapping Up
Hopefully, you now feel you have a few tricks up your sleeve to tackle the move. Just because most moves are stressful statistically doesn’t mean yours has to be. Good luck!
