Part of being a good driver is being able to be gracious and respectful to all of the other road users you might encounter. After all, driving and being behind the wheel can be a very stressful environment if you let it. Other drivers may not be that experienced and might cause some serious risks to you, or they could simply annoy you with their bad driving. But you should never react to this in an angry or disgruntled manner, or else it will only look bad on you. Road rage is never a good look! If we all drove with a bit more grace and respect, I’m sure there would be far fewer cases of road rage.
Here are a few ways you can be the gracious driver you want to see on the road.
Always Stay Calm Behind The Wheel
Firstly, it’s important to point out that you should always try to stay calm and relaxed when you are in the driver’s seat. This should help you become a better driver as you will be a lot more aware of the immediate environment around you and the car. It will also mean that you are a lot less likely to end up angry at other drivers and ending up in an embarrassing road-rage scenario.
Signal In Plenty Of Time
It is always polite to give the drivers behind you plenty of notice when you are going to turn off. If you don’t, then they will probably be wondering why you are slowing down as you approach the junction. So, make sure you always signal in plenty of time. This will also help to prevent accidents at junctions as well.
Never Tailgate The Driver In Front Of You
Lots of drivers get their backs up when they realize that the car behind them is right up behind them. This is known as tailgating and is one of the main causes of crashes. If you do get very close to the car in front of you, then you won’t be leaving enough space between the two vehicles. If the car in front brakes suddenly, then you will be very likely to go right into the back of them.
Don’t Ever Speed
Whether you are in a used Range Rover or a slick sports car, there is never any reason for you to be driving faster than the speed limit. This will only put you and other road users at danger. So, make sure you always obey the speed limit to keep you and others safe and to make sure you are never fined!
Use Your Horn Sparingly
The horn on your steering wheel can be used to let people know you are there or to express your annoyance at a bad driver. However, don’t go over the top when using this as it could be very disturbing to other road users. Only use it when it is absolutely necessary.
