It seems like CBD products are suddenly everywhere: from health food shops to supermarkets to specialist online brands like Dayzed CBD. That might lead you to wonder why CBD is suddenly so popular, and why CBD Oils, teas, edibles and even vape juice are all crowding onto shelves both physical and digital.
There are two answers to that question: we need to look at what CBD does for people that makes them so keen to buy it, but also why these products are suddenly available for people to discover and buy.
CBD Status
CBD is short for Cannabidiol – and as you might suspect that’s a compound derived from the cannabis plant. Until relatively recently, this was barred from sale – even if CBD wasn’t a controlled substance itself, it suffered by association with a class B drug. While it was known that CBD wasn’t the psychoactive component of cannabis (that’s THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol), the risks – and social stigma – were still judged too great to make products freely available.
In recent years, the World Health Organisation has published a landmark study into CBD. While it doesn’t make any claims as to the clinical efficacy of the substance for any specific conditions, it did find quite comprehensively that CBD had no potential for abuse, like other illegal drugs. Specifically, it found that Cannabidiol does not form addictive pathways in the brain.
This opened up the possibility for the sale of CBD based products – as long as they contain no THC. In the EU specific strains of the cannabis plant are used that naturally contain no more than .2% THC, making products derived from them safe for sale.
The Effects
The mere legality of CBD products doesn’t account for their popularity. The reason they’ve become the biggest new trend in natural health and wellness is the effects these products can have. While clinical studies are in their infancy, early results and anecdotal evidence suggests CBD based products can be helpful for both physical pain and mental distress!
As a painkiller, Cannabidiol appears to have some efficacy as an anti-inflammatory, meaning it can be useful for treating chronic issues like arthritis, and relieving post-exercise pain and discomfort.
Many people are often finding CBD products to be helpful when they’re managing mental health issues like anxiety, depression and low mood. Cannabidiol affects your endocannabinoid system in a similar way to how anti-depressant drugs affect your nervous system. While we can’t recommend using CBD to replace prescribed medicine from your GP, many have found it a useful complement to clinical solutions.
