4 Ways you can boost your mental health today

Our overall phycological well being is something that is so often overlooked. And this busy world we live in and the hectic lives we all lead often means that our mental health is often left behind and way down the list of our priorities. Taking steps to improve your mental health is something that a professional can certainly help you with, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take steps to improve your mental health on your own.

Here we’ll look at some super simple ways you can give your mental health a boost. And remember, if you feel like you’re floundering, overwhelmed and think you need help, you don’t have to suffer in silence – speak to a professional, a friend, loved one or colleague. Spend time in the outdoors

Whether it’s spending time in the great outdoors, or even in your own back garden – for gardening/ tree care tips click here – spending time surrounded by greenery, plants, flowers or just away from the hustle and bustle of cars, deadlines, office blocks and your kids arguing, will help to lower your blood pressure and relieve stress drastically. You’ll be amazed at what fresh air in your lungs and a chance to clear your thoughts can do for you. Try spending at least ten minutes every day somewhere open and green. Try to work it into your daily routine.

Tell yourself something positive – and believe it

It seems to be in our nature to look at ourselves and our lives in a negative light. It’s because of that view that anything we do or experience seems to simply reinforce the fact. As a way to boost your mental health and your confidence, try to change the way your inner self speaks. So instead of thinking – I did terribly in that job interview today. There’s no way I’ll get it. Flip it on its head instead and consider – Things certainly didn’t go to plan today, but that doesn’t mean I won’t get the job! Always be kind to yourself.

What are you grateful for?

When it feels and looks like nothing is going right, it’s so easy to slip into a dark place and feel like a failure. Industry experts have found that keeping a journal or a diary and writing down your feelings and as well as all the things you’re grateful for, can help you reassess your desolation. This isn’t an instant fix, studies show that doing this over time and allowing your writing to become a habit means it will work for you in the long term. So there’s no reason not to start now!

Exercise

Exercise boosts endorphins and banishes stress. It boosts your mood and gives you a sense of accomplishment whether you’ve walked for 5 minutes on the treadmill or lifted 50kg. You don’t even have to head to the gym, a simple Pilates workout at home when the kids are asleep – check out YouTube for some beginners programmes – or just walking around the park on your lunch break.
