It is such an important purchase for any parent as it is the biggest sign that their child is growing up. Getting a car is a rite of passage for our children, but of course, we’ve got to make sure that we are being incredibly sensible and pragmatic when it comes to getting the right car. So with this in mind, how can you make the whole process easier for you and your child?
Look at the Type of Car That Suits Them
While your child may be looking for something with a little bit more aesthetic value, you’ve got to get the balance right. Sure they may be looking for something with incredibly stylish wheels but ensuring that your child has something that is going to be safe for them is priority number one. We have to remember that the first year after they pass their driving test is the most dangerous of all and is when the chance of accidents are at their highest. And while you might be looking for some sort of cheap runaround car, remember, the cheaper the car, the more prep you’ve got to do to make sure it is actually good for your child.
Teaching Them Responsibilities Behind the Wheel
After weeks of practical training in driving school and searching for driving test cancellations and road test schedules, your child will finally be able to manoeuvre a vehicle by themselves. While this might seem like a relief, there’s still a lot more to learn. And while you might feel bad for putting certain rules in place, now is when they really have to start learning the rules of the road. Of course, you want them to be able to enjoy themselves and go for the obligatory drive through, remember that your child is going to need to acclimatize slowly to the rules of the road, especially if you live in a built-up area. Think about having a plan in place, for example, not letting them drive at night.
Giving Them Practical Skills
You need to make sure your children are not just safe behind the wheel but will be able to look after themselves if there are any problems when they are out and about. Do they know what to do if there are any problems with the tires? Do they know how to change the oil? There are many more practical things that we should all know. Take this as an opportunity for you both to learn together. They don’t need to be a mechanic, but if they are in a bind, it’s a good idea to make sure that they have these essential skills under their belts.
Of course, we want them to enjoy their time out after they pass their test, and this means that they will have a lot more freedom. So you may revel in this, and the fact that they’re out more will make it less stressful for you at home! But, the whole process of getting a car can be stressful, so work with your child and make sure that they are being as safe as humanly possible on the road.
