Just passed your driving test? Well done! It’s no mean feat, thanks to just how difficult the driving test is in 2024, and you should celebrate right now! However, there are also a few things you should do right about now to make sure you get onto the road in a quick and confident manner. Brush up on your car maintenance, get an idea about the car you want to buy, and tick off the three points below on your journey to slipping behind the wheel.
Check Where Your Licence is
In the UK, once you’ve passed your driving test, you can hand the provisional over at the end of the test and the practitioner will do the rest for you. You can then wait for your full licence to arrive, and once you have, you’ll see your driving qualification right there in black and white!
However, full licences can take a while to arrive, with some people waiting upwards of six months for it to come through. Don’t sit, wait, and worry. Get in touch with the DVLA and find out where your licence is, and in some cases, you might have to ask if it’s even been processed.
Whilst you don’t technically need it in your pocket in order to drive, it’s always better to have it on hand just in case someone needs to check it!
Compare Car Prices
If you know what a car is going to cost to buy, on average, you’re going to have a much better expectation of the car you’re going to be able to afford. Head online to edmunds, get a breakdown of the current car costs across the industry, and see where your budget matches up.
You may find you’re able to afford a better car than you were planning, but you may also find that you’ll need to downsize a little and buy something a little more within your realistic price range. Of course, buying second hand is always going to be more affordable than buying brand new, but if you’ve got a good chance of securing a powerful auto loan, you can still buy a brand new, never driven before model that you’ve always dreamed of calling your own.
All in all, the more research you do, the better your chances of getting a car that’ll work for you.
Get to Know Insurance Terms
You’ll need insurance to get on the road, legally, but you shouldn’t ever rush buying an insurance policy. You need to know what you’re getting into, which means getting to know car insurance terms inside and out!
Find out what your premium could be, depending on the car you want to buy, and then make sure you read through the terms of the policy in full. Don’t let the jargon intimidate you; get into the small print and Google anything that isn’t immediately understandable.
Once you pass your driving test, start celebrating! But don’t let the hard work stop there.
