There’s a lot to say about living a happy life. Sometimes, this seems like the elusive thing we’re all chasing. It can feel impossible to achieve and as if we always strive to reach that destination. But without sounding like a cliche, life really is a journey and it’s the journey that we need to be focusing on. It’s never about waiting to be happy or saying ‘I’ll be happier when…’. Instead, it’s about focusing on how you can make yourself happier now, today, in this moment. And that usually comes with choosing to live life on your own terms.
But what exactly does that look like? And how can you know that you’re living life on your own terms? In this blog post, we’re going to run through the seven things you need to do to shake your life up today, live on your own terms, and find more happiness. Let’s take a look.
1. Decide What You Want
To begin with, it’s always important to decide what you really want out of life. And this isn’t always the surface-level stuff, but more like how you want to live and how you want to feel every single day. So sit down and think about how you want your life to be, what will feel good to you, and how you want to spend your time. You don’t have to rush this at all. It’s important to get it right so that you can take action and make it happen.
2. Understand Your Values
As you’re doing that, you may find it helpful to work out what your core values are. Not what society expects them to be, or what you’ve been raised to believe – but what actually matters to you and what you value the most. Doing so will often point you in the right direction of how to live a fulfilling life.
3. Set Priorities
Then you’re going to want to make sure that you’re starting to set priorities for yourself and your life. So think about what matters most to you. Do you want to spend more time with your family? Travel more? Start your own business? This is where you can start making your actions match up with your values and what you want out of life.
4. Set Boundaries
Alongside your priorities, it’s going to really help you if you can set some boundaries in your life too. The whole purpose of living life on your own terms is the idea of doing things your way and prioritising your needs. It’s not always having to do what others expect of you or having your boundaries broken. So this is why you need t be able to put your own boundaries in place, in terms of what you’ll accept and won’t. This could be about your time, who you socialise with, how you’re spoken to, work-life limits, and anything else that allows you to protect your peace.
5. Do Things Just for You
When you feel like you’ve got all of that covered off, you can then start living a little more. And this involves doing things just for you. Not always thinking about everyone else and putting their needs above your own, but trying to steal a bit off time for yourself. Maybe you want to take tennis lessons, get a helix piercing, or start writing a book? It doesn’t matter what it is, as long as you’re doing it for yourself.
6. Do What You Love
Alongside that, you may find that it’s important for you to start doing more things that you love. And if you don’t know what that looks like, it’s time to explore. You deserve to have satisfaction in life – and that can often come from our pastimes. It doesn’t matter what those things are, just that you love them. So if you want to spend time reading or gardening or playing music, do more of that.
7. Make the Most of Every Moment
Ultimately, it’s always going to be about choosing the live in the moment and trying and make the best of every situation. That’s what living life on your own terms is all about. It’s not about feeling boxed in or stuck or overthinking – it’s about doing! So even when you’re maybe not in the best situation or doing what you want to be doing, you can make the most of it. That way, as you’re starting to get to where you want to be, everything feels all the easier.
