These days, a marriage proposal takes time and planning. A man can spend weeks and months deciding on the perfect time to ask for a woman’s hand in marriage. There are also those women who are strong and confident and will ask a man to marry them first. And then there are also same-sex couples.
Besides the when and where the person asking will be faced with choosing from many awesome engagement ring options. When deciding to get married, there are so many questions that need answers as well as plans to make.
How Long is a Normal Engagement?
After a proposal of marriage, the next question on the minds of the recently engaged is about how long they should remain engaged before the actual marriage will begin. Every couple is different and each union will take varying amounts of time to plan. Planning a wedding will take more time for some couples than others.
Those who would like to get to the wedding sooner, rather than later, should plan a smaller, less complicated ceremony. Those wanting a larger, more detailed, wedding, will likely stay engaged for a longer period of time.
The Pros For a Long Engagement
One of the most important reasons to have a longer engagement is so that you can really get to know your future spouse. You may think you know this person, but planning a wedding can be a stressful time for both individuals.
You will find that you may have vast differences in opinions on everything from the food to be served, which catering services to use, to the location and time of year to hold the wedding. This can cause tension in a relationship, something that needs time to be worked out.
Another reason for prolonging the engagement is to live together. It is extremely difficult to start living with another person, even if you dearly love that individual. Moving into an apartment or a house together before getting married may not sit well with everyone, but it is far better to live together and find out that you can’t do it than to get a divorce after a short period of time.
You Can’t Change Someone
When your engagement is longer, you should not spend this time trying to change the other person. It is a time for discovery and to know if you can truly love that person through good times and bad. If there are things you disagree on, it is a chance to discuss and find reasons for the disagreement.
Take this time to talk about the future more than the past. Do you both want children? Are careers more important at this time than starting a family? These are only a few of the tough questions to which you need to agree on the answers.
If you truly love one another, no amount of time will change your love. A long or short engagement will be time for planning your future and little else. Enjoy your time together, cherish the memories of this time alone and with family and friends. If you are lucky, you will only have one marriage.
