Holding a birthday or any other celebration at your own place is excellent. You know where everything is, people you invite will most likely know the place too and, best of all, it’s free to use. If you don’t mind cleaning up the mess afterwards (or even better, get a cleaning service), it’s the perfect place to host. It might get a bit tiring after a while though, and a change of scenery might be exactly what you need. And before you rush off to the nearest food chain for an all-inclusive event including balloons, consider the following, more grown-up, options.

What about renting out a villa or mansion? Granted you have a sizeable group to host, you might be able to bring the wow factor by recreating a party you usually see in teen movies. Bring the red cups and beer keg or for more civilized grown-up gatherings a case of wine. If you manage to book yourself a mansion, perhaps see if you can turn it into a costume party. Harry Potter themed party, anyone? Including the mandatory movie marathon. Just make sure you don’t try to find out what that rumbling sound is from the cellar.

If a mansion is too conservative, why not get your sea legs on? Find a yacht to rent in Miami, including crew and amenities, and party in international waters. You might need to arrange your own drinks and food, but pretty much everything else will be taken care of. Sure, the mandatory drinks and large water masses don’t mix warning applies, but pirates seemed to have fun, didn’t they?

Don’t think you are seaworthy? Try renting a party bus. Yes, it is precisely what it sounds like. A coach, kitted with varying neon coloured and flashing lights, equipped with a sound system and loaded with a considerable number of snacks and beverages, but mostly drinks. The best thing about the bus is that even for reluctant would be guests there is no excuse anymore, the party is coming to them!

If that sounds too boozy for you, maybe an exclusive cigar club might strike a more sophisticated tone. With a good glass of whiskey and a tasty cigar, you can shoot the breeze with your select group of guests. Obviously not suited for non-smokers. Also, you can be pretty sure there will be a no-vaping policy at the cigar club.

Here’s an idea, what about renting out a comedy club? You can probably get your local talent to do a set for a reasonable price, plus you have a go yourself or any other family member or friend. Sure, being funny in real life will translate to be being extremely funny on stage. Best case scenario: you have found America’s next comedic talent; worst case scenario: you get a few good laughs at someone bombing completely.

At the risk of sounding too much like a children’s party, maybe bring back the bowling alley as the perfect venue. It’s excellent, it has fast food, beverages, the element of competition and if you are lucky, funky disco lights and music. After a few drinks, no one will really notice you putting up the guardrails.
