Four Tips for Cutting Down Family Expenses (while Still Living Comfortably)

Have you been noticing the expenses creeping up in your household as of late? Are you working hard to support a family, but it still feels as though you’re living paycheck to paycheck? If so, you are in good company, as a recent study by CareerBuilder has found that a whopping 78% of U.S. workers are just like you and your family, living paycheck to paycheck.

Of course, knowing that’s the norm and then accepting it as your reality are two totally different things. Perhaps you’re tired of shelling out what seems like too much and just barely making your bill payments. If that’s the case it could be time to look at ways you can cut down on the family expenses. Here are four tips that will help make that possible yet will still allow you to live comfortably and not make any massive sacrifices.

Create a Budget and Stick to It

In order to cut down on family expenses, you first have to be aware of what you’re currently spending. The only way to learn that information is to create a budget. Make sure you add all the expenses, even things like a clothing allowance, entertainment, toys, etc. You want to be as honest as possible.

Once you’ve plugged in all the numbers, you can start looking at the categories where you could cut back. The typical ones that can often do with some trimming are your grocery allowance, your cable/cell phone/internet bill, gas for the car, entertainment, dining out, and the miscellaneous category. It doesn’t mean you need to bring them down to zero, it just means making some cuts to each.

After making cuts and creating a new budget, the key is to stick to it. You may find it useful to use a budget tracking app that will allow you to track all your purchases and expenses.

Give Couponing a Try

If you thought the days of couponing were well gone, it’s time to think twice. Couponing is still very much alive, it’s just available in a more convenient manner. Today it’s all about digital couponing, allowing to you to find the coupons you’re interested in a lot faster and then store them on your device. There’s no need to deal with clipping coupons out of papers and flyers and then stuffing them all in your purse.

Adopting the attitude that less is more, using what you have, and getting a bit creative is an incredibly healthy attitude, and will result in you spending a whole lot less. Of course, everyone needs to be on-board with this mantra, not just mom and dad.

Cutbacks Don’t Have to Equal Sacrifices
