Why You Need To Declutter Before Moving House

Everyone accumulates ‘stuff’ as they live their lives. It might not seem like a lot when you look at it bit by bit, but when you add it all up, there can be a lot in your home that, although you might have liked it at the time, you’re no longer quite as fond of or that you no longer need or that, if you’re really honest with yourself, you just don’t have the room for. Go through them today and sell or donate to charity so others will enjoy them. If you have a lot of old furniture or any damaged materials, renting a same day dumpster rental is probably the best option for you to get rid of them.

The problem is, most of the time we just let these things live with us in our homes as getting rid of them feels like such a big task. However, when it’s time to move somewhere new, you really won’t want to take this unwanted and unneeded clutter with you. This is even more true if you’re moving to a different country after an ILR application has come through; the logistics of moving abroad are hard enough without trying to arrange to move things you don’t actually want in your new home. So with all of this in mind, here are some of the best reasons to declutter before moving house.

To Sell The House

Before you can move to a new property, you need to sell your old one. This is not always as easy as you might hope it would be, especially as there could be a lot of competition. If this is the case, you’ll need to ensure your home stands out. Apart from making sure the decoration is in order and any repairs are made before you put the property on the market, decluttering can – perhaps surprisingly – help a lot.

When people come to view a house, they want to imagine their own furniture and possessions in there. They want to be able to imagine living in the space. This is not going to be possible if it is full of clutter. In fact, you might even be doing the property another disservice by making the rooms appear much smaller than they really are. To prevent the property from taking a long time to sell, it’s best to tidy up and declutter as soon as you can, and certainly before it goes on the market.

To Make A New Start

Whatever the reason behind your move, it’s a chance to make an entirely new start in your life, your career, your personal life, or all of these things. You can start fresh, and that can be something very positive for your mental health.

Starting fresh will be hard to do when you simply move your clutter from one property to the next, making the new house look just like the old one. And because those possessions will remind you of your old home and your old life, you won’t be able to truly start fresh with it all around you once more. Declutter and this won’t be an issue.

To Make Money

Moving house is an expensive thing to do. It will cost to make the house ready for viewers, it will cost to pay the fees associated with selling and buying, and it will cost to physically move too. Therefore, if you can declutter and make some money simultaneously, this is a wise idea.

You already know that decluttering is sensible, so you’ll be doing it anyway. If you sell the items rather than donate them or throw them out, you can make some extra money to put towards your move. It might not be much, but anything will be helpful, and since you’re removing the stuff anyway, it certainly can’t hurt.
