A Short and Simple Guide To Basement Conversion

We’ve all heard about home extensions and many of us will likely know someone who has had one done, but another way of adding space and value to your property, if you are lucky enough to have one, of course, is a basement conversion.

Using the space

Converting loft space is a very popular way to add an extra liveable floor to your property, but it’s not necessarily as practical as perhaps a basement conversion could be. It really depends on your goals. Your basement can be used for extra living space for the whole family – an extra living room or maybe a games room or playroom. Whereas a loft extension could really only be used as a bedroom – a more private area. Therefore a basement conversion could be a great way of bringing the family and visitors together.

What guidance should you follow with a basement conversion?

There are some very important considerations you need to think about when you have decided to convert your basement. Take care to read through.

Planning Permission – You do not need any sort of additional planning permission if you are converting an existing basement. Although, if you have plans to adjust the ceiling height, or create a whole new basement, then you would need permission before beginning work.

Building Regulations – By converting and extending the area, the change will need the approval of Building Regulations because you are amending the existing building.  The regulations follow statutory standards that ensure the building is safe.

Plumbing – If you are going to have an additional bathroom or utility room in your new basement conversion you will need to take the plumbing into consideration. Sewage pumping systems are available for this type of conversion. JT Pumps have a huge selection available and are happy to talk to any customers interested in basement conversions and in need of some guidance.

A basement conversion can be a complex process and the tips detailed above only just touch on the guidelines that should be followed at the start of the process. It’s extremely advisable to appoint a professional to assist you in the plans and then a recognised basement construction firm to help you achieve your dream.
