Addiction is something a person may struggle with for a lifetime. Resuming a normal life takes time once this person has overcome his or her battle with drugs or alcohol. However, certain things help to ease this process, and the following are some tips that may be of help during this time.
Relapses Happen
The most important thing for addicts and their loved ones to remember is a relapse is likely. This does not mean there is no hope. The key to a successful recovery is recognizing this for what it is and to get back on track as soon as possible. This may require another stay at a rehab facility, such as Honey Lake, or it might mean an outpatient program. The addict must find what works for him or her to prevent this from occurring again.
Establish Expectations
Addicts need to understand what is expected of them in order to move forward. For example, halfway houses have established rules that the addict must follow and they need these guidelines to help them remain on the right path. If an addict is not taking this particular path during recovery, he or she needs to talk to those around them to learn what the expectations are.
Set Goals
Setting goals gives the addict something to focus on other than drugs or alcohol. However, the goals must be realistic. Just as a person trying to lose weight shouldn’t set a goal of losing 100 pounds, an addict must choose small accomplishments that he or she can easily achieve and work toward those.
For example, start by setting a goal of remaining sober for one week. Once this has been accomplished, set a goal for two weeks. Build up over time, as each success provides the addict with encouragement to keep pushing forward.
Forgive Yourself
Addicts often beat themselves up for allowing a drug to take over their life. While the past cannot be changed, this doesn’t mean the person doesn’t deserve a better future. However, addicts often struggle to forgive themselves for the mistakes they made. All humans err at one time or another and an addict is no different. Keep this in mind as you move forward with a sober life free from your addiction.
Take Part in Physical Activity
The body takes a hit when a person uses drugs or alcohol. Getting back into shape is part of overcoming the addiction. Some people find they enjoy spending time in the gym lifting weights or swimming. Others, however, do best with team sports, as they have people surrounding them and these individuals can serve as an additional support system.
Support Is Essential
Build a support network to turn to when things become difficult. This may be a sponsor, family member, or counselor at an alcohol rehab facility in New Jersey. These individuals provide encouragement when it is needed, help when the addict is struggling, and more. Everyone in this network needs to be nonjudgmental, however, so the addict doesn’t feel as if he or she is being condemned for any mistakes that are made.
Engage in a New Hobby
A new hobby engages the mind and helps to reduce cravings for the substance of choice. Addicts spend a great deal of time obtaining the drug and then using it, and this time needs to be filled in other ways during the recovery process. Furthermore, this is a great way to meet new people who don’t use drugs, an important part of the recovery process as well.
Don’t give up. Addiction does not define a person. It is only a small part of who you are. Focus on the other elements and use the tips when you are struggling. You can overcome this challenge with the right help and support. It’s simply a matter of knowing where to obtain this assistance.
