Establishing A Stress-Reduction Toolkit

For some people, stress is an occasional fact of life, a temporary emotional state that passes and, in some circumstances, can even be beneficial. However, for others, such as those who experience chronic stress or anxiety disorders, it can be much more persistent, exhausting, and can even affect their physical health. As such, finding the right means to manage stress, beyond medication, can be highly useful. Here, we’re going to look at some of the tools you can keep in your arsenal to help you manage stress in the long run.

Pick Up A Journal

Writing about your emotions, the events throughout the day, and the thoughts that stick in your head is not just a way to chronicle your life; it’s a real self-care strategy, as well. Journaling is one of the easiest stress management tools to fit into your daily life. All you typically need is five minutes a day with a book and a pen (or a laptop if you prefer). You don’t need a particular strategy for what you write, but you can use gratitude lists or reflection prompts available online to help you find a place to start. Writing your thoughts down gives you a safe space to process emotions and points of conflict with a sense of distance, rather than keeping those thoughts stuck in your head all day.

The Right Sensory Calming Rituals

Having the right tools on hand to create a more immediate, sensory state of calm can be very useful, as well. For some people, that might mean having some soothing tea you can make to sit down for minute when you feel that stress building up physically. For others, it may mean essential oils or scented candles for aromatherapy. There are also providers of medical cannabis, which is becoming more widely used for chronic stress disorders. Some of these solutions are available only from private specialists, but you should talk to your doctor about any substances you intend to try, especially if you’re already on medication.

Meditation Apps Make Self-Care A Habit

Meditation has been practised for mental and spiritual health benefits for literal millennia, but aside from being time-tested, there is plenty of research to support its effectiveness as a practice. However, for those who have never done it, the idea can prove surprisingly daunting. Meditation apps can not only help guide you into the practice, but they can also help you make it a habit, taking the time to reflect or to simply slow things down and find some mental balance before going on with your day. Mindfulness meditation can help you learn the tools for mood regulation that you use all throughout the day, not just while you’re meditating.

If you think you have a chronic issue with stress and anxiety, it’s worth reaching out to talk to someone about it, if you haven’t already. Whether through medication, counselling, or other wellness practices, you can find the approach that helps you bring some balance ot your life.
