Big Oral Health Mistakes To Avoid At All Costs

14 January 2020 5 min read

When physical health is concerned, the teeth and gums are often overlooked. While oral hygiene is essential to maintaining white teeth and fresh breath, it affects other parts of the body too. If you find the idea of tooth loss a nightmare, you should know that heart disease and cancer are also among the serious health issues caused by poor oral health. That means protecting your mouth essentially protects the entire body. Unfortunately, brushing daily doesn’t mean that you take care of your teeth. With that in mind, here are ten big oral health mistakes you must avoid.

Keeping Toothbrushes Too Long

Everyone knows you need a toothbrush to clean your teeth. A toothbrush is the most effective tool for scrubbing away large amounts of bacteria each day. However, while your teeth might be left clean, the brush itself won’t be. Bacteria can cling to the bristles of a toothbrush, which means, when you clean your teeth, you’ll transfer that bacteria to your mouth again. The best solution is to change toothbrushes. Rather than wait years, this must be done every few months.

Missing That Evening Clean

People rarely want to leave the house with bad breath. That is why most of us brush our teeth each morning. Sadly, you don’t have this motivation at night. Because of this, many people head to bed without brushing their teeth. While this might not seem like a huge problem, missing that evening clean can result in tooth decay, along with other oral health issues. After all, bacteria coat your teeth during the day and will continue to multiply in your mouth as you sleep at night.

Brushing Far Too Hard

Scrubbing your teeth doesn’t always mean you’re cleaning them well. In fact, the harder you brush, the more damage you cause to your teeth. This is because aggressive scrubbing will often cause gum recession and enamel abrasion, both of which can lead to tooth structure loss and sensitivity issues. Signs that you’re brushing too hard include teeth sensitivity, receding gums, and frayed bristles. An easy fix to this problem is to use less pressure when cleaning.

Ignoring Any Cracked Teeth

Cracked teeth can be caused by various things. Chewing on hard foods, hitting your head, and grinding your teeth are just a few examples. Without treatment, the crack could become worse, affecting the structure of the tooth. Many people avoid seeking help because they assume it will be expensive. Thankfully, you can find affordable dental crowns in your area. Depending on the severity of the crack, bonding, root canal, and extractions are all effective treatment options too.

Using Poor Whitening Products

Most people want whiter teeth. However, having your teeth professionally whitened by a dentist might feel like overkill. For this reason, many of us turn to over-the-counter whitening products at pharmacies and drug stores. Because these products are for sale, we assume that they’re safe, but that isn’t always the case. Any whitening products not sold by a dental professional isn’t regulated. This means that overuse could easily create sensitivity and alter the tooth structure.

Buying Any Cheap Toothpaste

Like tooth whitening products, different kinds of toothpaste aren’t created equal. Although buying whatever toothpaste is on sale would lower your household costs temporarily, it could harm your oral health. When buying toothpaste, make sure you look for an ADA stamp. This stamp shows that the American Dental Association has carried out proper testing on the product. If you’re unsure which toothpaste to choose, you should talk to your dentist about any oral health needs.

Sharing A Single Toothbrush

When a loved one stays the night, you must be a good host. However, there is only so far you should go to help them. If your friend or relative has forgotten their toothbrush, you must never allow them to use yours. Sharing a toothbrush means sharing bacteria. Not only could this cause oral health issues, but it could make you both sick too. Keeping a spare toothbrush at home is helpful, but if you don’t have one to hand now, make sure you go out and buy a new one soon.

Grazing During The Day

The frequency of which you consume sugar is far more important than quantity. Essentially, this means that it’s more damaging to your teeth when you snack on sugary foods all day when compared with eating that same amount of sugar in one sitting. This is because snacking will leave your teeth constantly coated in sugar, which eats away at your teeth. If you’re craving a sweet snack, it makes more sense to enjoy a cake now, rather than grabbing candy all day.

Cleaning Right After Eating

Certain foods can stain your teeth and leave you with bad breath. That is why many people attempt to combat the problem by cleaning their teeth immediately after eating. The trouble is, many foods have a low pH, which creates an acidic environment in the mouth. Brushing your teeth while they’re exposed to this acidity will likely cause serious damage. Drinking a glass of water will give you fresher feeling, so do that first and then wait thirty minutes before brushing.

Putting Off Dental Checks

Even when taking good care of your teeth, you must schedule regular dentist appointments. A serious oral health issue could easily go unnoticed unless you do. Most experts recommend that you visit the dentist around every six months. This would allow them to monitor your oral health and clean your teeth. Many people are scared of dentists, which is why they do everything that can to make their patients comfortable. You’ll usually be in the chair for less than twenty minutes.

Proper oral hygiene is as important to your overall health as it is to your mouth. Unless you take care of your teeth and gums, you could find yourself with a serious health problem, like heart disease or cancer. The good news is, maintaining good oral hygiene isn’t especially difficult. Avoiding the mistakes above can prevent countless common health problems.
