The Mom's Guide to Looking After Your Health After Having Kiddos

Becoming a parent is like being on an emotional roller coaster. One minute, you’re over the moon; the next, you’re sleep-deprived, hoping for a quiet moment. It’s easy to forget that you also matter in this parenting gig. So, let’s chat about how we can keep you looking after your health while you’re busy raising those little ones.

Hey Mama, Self-Care Isn’t Selfish!

Self-care is that buzzword you’ve heard a million times. But let’s be honest; it’s often the first thing to go out the window once the baby comes home. Well, let’s try and change that! Because let’s face it, you can’t pour from an empty cup, right? So, let’s ensure your cup is filled with health and happiness.

Fuel Up with Good Food

After the baby, your body needs some TLC and good grub. We’re talking proteins, whole grains, fruits, and veggies. And, of course, lots and lots of water, especially if you’re breastfeeding. Try to cut back on the junk food, as tempting as it might be when running on empty.

Move it, Move it

Now, I know the last thing you feel like doing is hitting the gym. But even a stroll around the block or a simple yoga routine at home can do wonders. Once you feel up to it, add more pep to your step. Remember to get your doc’s green light before you start, though.

Health Check-ins: Because You’re Worth It

This is where your health assessment comes in. Just like you keep track of your baby’s growth and vaccinations, you must also keep an eye on your health. Regular check-ups and screenings can nip any potential health issues in the bud. And remember your routine mammograms and pap smears.

Check-in with Your Feelings

Postpartum blues are more common than you might think, so watching how you’re feeling emotionally is super important. If you’re feeling more down than up, more overwhelmed than overjoyed, reach out for help. Remember, it’s okay not to be okay. You’re doing a tough job, mama!

Reach Out and Build Your Tribe

Parenting can sometimes feel like a lonely journey. So, be bold about reaching out and building your support network. Family, friends, mommy groups, they’re all potential allies on this crazy ride. And always remember, asking for help doesn’t make you weak; it makes you human!

Practice Mindfulness: The New Mom’s Secret Weapon

So here’s another little nugget for you. Have you ever heard of mindfulness? It’s all about staying in the present moment. When you’re feeding at 2 AM, instead of worrying about the mountain of laundry waiting for you, focus on the now. The tiny fingers, the soft sighs, the warmth of your baby. It’s all about finding joy in the little things.

The Bottom Line

Having kids is a wild ride, but that doesn’t mean your health should take the back seat. By eating right, moving more, getting regular health assessments, looking after your mental health, and leaning on your support network, you’re setting yourself up to be the best mama you can be. Because at the end of the day, when you’re feeling good, you’re better equipped to raise your fantastic little people.
