Being a mum is mostly about ensuring that your child is always okay. The fact is once kids come into the picture, your life will have to revolve around them. But actually, there’s such a thing as doing too much, and so you should be careful how to deal with them. Being too laid back is also not the way to go because you wouldn’t want your kids to walk all over you. Here are some of the few ways to find the right balance and still be a cool mum.
Be Confident in Your Skills
One fact to always keep in mind is that you are the parent and so your word takes precedence. You must not, in any way, compromise on some aspects of your child’s life. For example, their safety is not to be played with – whether it’s their safety outdoors, indoors or online via their phones you simply cannot take any chances. And unbeknownst to your child, their phone is an incredibly powerful tool which you can use to monitor their safety outdoors. Thankfully, there’s a lot of information available on how you can do it. However, your child is their own person, and so you should sometimes try to understand their point of view. Do not abuse your authority, and try very much to give them their space when necessary.
Be There for Everything
Having a loving, trusting relationship with your kids is the definition of being a cool mum. You must be available for your kids no matter the circumstances. This means withholding your judgment and allowing them to speak out their opinion. It is better that way because you get to pick their minds and then steer them in the desired direction. It’s quite scary for your child to seek advice elsewhere because someone could mislead them. It might be difficult, but you’re assured that they will come to you first, which is a win.
Try to Say ‘Yes’
‘No’ can be the default answer to every suggestion your kid makes in your quest to be the parent of the year. But wait a minute and ask ‘why not’? Turning your child down every time will more likely encourage them to do things behind your back. But set standards that you never compromise on and have honest conversations with your child about why they shouldn’t cross those lines. Discuss the advantages and possible ways things could go wrong with them so that you both are on the same page about certain situations. Let them also know that you trust them and that everything is in their best interest.
Get to Know Them
The best way to relate well with someone is to get to know everything about them. Develop an interest in your kid’s life, including their hobbies, friends, and everything they like. Get to understand why they enjoy those things and genuinely help them along. Be ready for their different phases because there will be many but accept them for what they are.
These tips are just a few ways that you and your kid can get along with minimal hiccups, and you can be safe in the knowledge that you’re a pretty cool mum. Through it, all, remember to stay positive and patient but still realistic about your expectations. Try to have some you time also, so that you can be your best self for them.
