Music: Why It’s So Important

I can categorically say that I don’t honestly know what I would do if suddenly one day, music was taken away and we were never allowed to listen to it ever again. I mean, can you imagine what an awful place the world would become?

For as long as I can remember, music has been a constant in my life. From as early as three or four years old when I was dancing around to Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon and then a few years later when I developed my first crush on Jason Donovan. Music was always there.

I used to listen to my parent’s music, but mainly, I was hugely influenced by my older Sister’s music. That’s when I started to listen to music that had a bit of credibility to it. Back in the day, 80’s metal was very popular. So there I was seven or eight years old, listening to Bon Jovi and Guns N’Roses. I was a child with taste!

I have so many memories attached to so many different types of music. Because I listened to such a huge variety when I was younger, I still have a varied taste to this day. You can check out my 30 Day Music Challenge, here on this blog, to see just how diverse my taste is. But this post isn’t about my taste in music. It’s about why it’s so important.

There is a quote that I totally relate to:

“When you’re happy you enjoy the music. When you’re sad you understand the lyrics.”

Music has got me through some of the worst of times. Breakups and heartaches, love and loss. When I’ve been having a hard time, you can always find a song that describes exactly where you are at that particular moment in time. If I’m having a bad day, you can normally find me, headphones in, music turned up loud. It’s my therapy. It’s my drug. It gets me through the toughest of times and I can always feel better after.

On the contrary, music has always been there for me through the good times too. I spent hours upon hours planning the music for my wedding. The soundtrack to that day had to be just perfect and I have no idea how I managed to cut my ridiculously long list down to a handful of songs that would forever hold special memories. It was almost more difficult than the table plan!

Some songs can be so powerful that they can take you back to a time and a place in a heartbeat. This can be great, but this can also have its disadvantages. Like I mentioned earlier, many songs are connected to heartbreak and sometimes, it doesn’t matter how many years ago the upset was, you can be transported back there in a nanosecond if it catches you by surprise.

Despite all of this, music remains the one constant in my life. I couldn’t live without it. It’s a huge part of every day of my life and it’s the one thing that I swear keeps me sane at times. If ever I have a bad day, I turn up the volume and just have a bit of time to myself. Soon enough, I’m feeling fine again.

Music

So, in the words on Lori Deschene pictured above. Thank you, for always clearing my head, healing my heart and lifting my spirits. I truly know that if there were no one else to rely on, I can rely on you to see me through. I’ll forever be grateful.

Do you have the same relationship with music? Is it as important to you? Perhaps you can’t relate to this post at all? I’d love to know. Leave me a comment below.
