This is a bit of a special Wednesday Wisdom this week. Not only is the quote I’ve chosen bloody lovely, but it’s become really very special in our house over the last couple of weeks. During the first few minutes of 2017, the words ‘I love my life’ were sang by us as a family. Little did we know that they would continue to feature in our lives on a daily basis! We had made a memory and it’s a real special one.
If you aren’t already guessing where this is going, let me fill you in.
As I’m sure a lot of you are well aware, Robbie Williams did a concert on the BBC on New Year’s Eve. It’s probably at this point I should make it known, if you don’t already know, that I have loved Mr Williams for almost twenty-five years (yes, I am that old!). He was my first love. And, I got to marry Rob – just not that one!! So, Robbie is the other Rob in my life, and he probably always will be.
Anyway, I digress. I was looking forward to seeing in the New Year watching the show on the TV, but in the end we ended up at our neighbour’s house, where we had spent the evening. Little Man came along aswell, they have young children too so it was nice for them to spend some time together playing.
Shortly after Big Ben had chimed, after the amazing fireworks and after Auld Lang Syne had been sung, Robbie returned to the stage and sang a song that now means so much. The song is called ‘Love My Life’.
Now I know that Robbie is a bit like Marmite. You either love him or hate him. Yes he has an ego, but I love that about him. There’s never any point getting into a disagreement with me about him because the man can do no wrong in my eyes. At first listen, the chorus in particular, the song can easily be misconstrued. It can sound like he’s bigging himself up, that he’s making out he’s powerful, beautiful, wonderful and magical. If you thought this and you haven’t already, you need to revisit the song. You need to take another listen.
He is singing the song to his children. The words in the chorus are the words he one day hopes his children will say to him. The song is about the one thing we hope we are all doing enough of as parents. Giving our children the best start in life that we can.
If you can picture the scene. We were there together, as a family in the first hour of 2017, singing and dancing this song. It was the first time we had seen the New Year in together as a family of three. Little Man had always been in bed any other year. We were singing it to our Little Man and he was singing it too. It was such a perfect start to the year.
No word of a lie, every day since then, the little fella has asked to listen to it. I have told him it’s a special song and it’s how we feel about him. He will grow up with it now, knowing how much it means to us and hopefully to him too. Music helps make the best memories and this is no exception.

I pray that I’m giving you all that matters,
And one day you’ll say to me,
“I love my life”
It’s all any of us want as parents. To be there for them as and when we can. To give them the best start in their lives to go on to become anything they want to be. But above all we want them to be happy and to enjoy the life they have. It’s such a beautiful song with a beautiful message. One day I might be able to listen to it without getting ‘something in my eye’!
