When I was little I used to dream of owning my own shop. I even used to set my bedroom up as one with a play cash register near the door and insist that family members come in and fill up the wicker basket I provided with random things from around my room. Ah, fond memories. But in this day and age and with online shopping taking over the retail world, is opening your own shop a realistic dream or a crazy fantasy?
Let’s take a look at what you need to consider if this dream of opening your own shop is something you are longing to pursue.
Business Plan
A formal business plan is crucial for anyone starting up in business. It will give you a definitive path you can follow and will ensure that you have done essential market research. Which, in turn, should set you up for success. It’s a known fact that companies that have a proper business plan in place are twice likely to grow than companies that choose not to.
Decide on your niche
You need to decide on your niche before you make any big decisions. By doing this you will differentiate your business from the opposition. Let’s be honest, competition is fiercer than it ever has been before, especially with online shopping. You need a perspective that is unique that will interest your customers and make them come to you over the larger retail store.
Research well
You need to know what people want. You can do this by surveying prospective customers. Surveys are an effective and easy way to gather lots of data that will not only be useful to you now but in the future too.
Organise your finances
From the offset, it’s of paramount importance to keep your business accounts separate from your personal finances. A dedicated business account will make life so much easier when keeping track of income and expenses, not to mention when it’s time to file that dreaded tax return.
Funding
It’s not surprising to hear that opening your own shop doesn’t come cheap. You need to think about the yearly or monthly lease on the physical space. Then there is the investment if you need to renovate that space to suit your requirements. You’ll need to decide on the shop layout and buy fixtures such as slat walling, to name but a few. You will need to purchase products, set up your POS system and payment processing hardware, advertise like crazy, invest in a grand opening, and pay staff.
Create the best store design
The way you decide to lay your shop out can have a real impact on your sales. You want a layout what will welcome shoppers and draw them in. You want them to be comfortable and be able to find what they are looking for, so it’s also really important to make sure your signage is on point.
It could be well worth investing in a designer that will help you decide on the best layout and shop fittings to invest in. By getting it right the first time around, it shouldn’t be long before you reap the rewards.
Opening your own shop can take years of planning and it’s not something that should be taken lightly. But if you put the time in to make a detailed plan and then execute it accordingly, it will set you on the path to success once your business is fully operational.
