Since the days of Noah and the Ark, it seems men and women, parakeets, and rhinos have been paired up two by two. Sometimes, it can seem like you’re never going to meet your soulmate, the love of your life, your one special mate. While not all animals feel the same need to love that humans do, it seems to be inherent in our DNA.
In fact, scientific experiments have shown love is one of the most basic and fundamental needs we have, along with the need/desire/requirement of being held and touched. So then, the question becomes, how can I meet that special someone to share my life with? Where do I find that special someone to kiss on New Year’s Eve or that perfect one to send a sappy Valentine to? Below, we have six suggestions to meet that lifetime partner, that special someone, that love of your life.
Work
No, it’s usually not best to date people you work with, but businesses often have after hour events where friends and co-workers mingle. Don’t skip out on it to go home to an episode of Big Bang Theory. Instead, head to the watering hole, whether you drink or not. Grab a pal to come along, and the two of you can mingle with everyone else. You never know who might bring along that special friend.
Church
Whatever your religion, attend with enthusiasm. While the worship service isn’t quite the place to meet and greet, individualized classes and volunteer opportunities are a great way to meet like-minded men and women.
Volunteer
When you can put your energy into helping others, you’re not always thinking about how to meet that special someone. So, volunteering could be a great option for your free time. Are you a pet lover? Animal shelters are almost in always in need of volunteers to help out during the week, evenings and on the weekends. National Parks, libraries and homeless shelters often are in need of spare hands. You never know who you might meet.
Birthday Parties
Never turn down a birthday party, even ones for small children. Parties are a great opportunity to meet up with all kinds of people from a variety of walks of life. Venturing out into the world will help improve your skills and allow you to see and be seen.
Mail Order
While it may seem a bit drastic, an increasing number of people are going the Mail Order Bride route. Who says your mate is in your own backyard? Indeed, she may be in Peru, Russia or Korea. Take a look at the various sites available and strike up a conversation with one or two to get started.
Take a Class
Remember how much easier it was to make friends in school? Experience that rush of new people once again by taking a class a local college or a scuba diving class at the Y. This way, you’ll be meeting new people who obviously have a similar interest in the activities you do.
Don’t give up because you take a class or volunteer at the zoo and don’t find your match immediately. Instead, be outgoing and put yourself “out there”. Your Prince or Princess Charming is not going to stroll into your home one day out of the blue. You need to be out among people making friends, and when the time is right, you’ll know it.
