It’s coming up to that time of year. Your baby is leaving school and the ‘prom’ is all she is talking about. It hardly seems five minutes since she was in pigtails starting at Primary School yet here she is, all these years later, exams will soon be over and the big wide world beckons.
Proms are a big deal to kids these days. It will likely be their first formal occasion that they can call their own. So it’s not surprising that the prom dress has to be ‘just right’. It’s not too dissimilar to when we choose our wedding dress – it has to be just right. And we understand that. Get it wrong and it could spoil the whole night and leave nothing but unhappy memories when it should be the best night of her life – so far!
But where do you start? How do you help her find the perfect prom dress? Before you tell your daughter “We’re going to choose your prom dress today!”, read on for some helpful tips.
Set a budget
You need to be clear from the start what budget you have. You don’t want to spoil the whole prom dress shopping experience by falling out because the dream dress is too expensive. It is wise to have the conversation before you leave the house so that you both have the same expectations and are on the same page.
If your daughter ends up desperate for a dress that is slightly over budget, discuss how she could contribute herself. Perhaps she could get a part-time job to help make up the difference? Not only would this help her appreciate her dress more, but it can also give you the opportunity to teach her about responsibility as well.
Consider the location and atmosphere
Does the prom have a theme? If so, consider this when choosing the dress. For example, if the party has an under the sea theme, you could pick pearly pinks, seafoam greens seashell purples, sandy yellows or similar colours.
Choose the best colour for her complexion
If your daughter has fair skin, try different colours, such as bright pastels, sapphire, blue undertones, and light pink. Greens, blacks, whites, and blues can also complement a pale skin tone.
Medium skin tones look great in eggshell blue, plum, lavender, soft pastels, peach, and pink tones. Peachy and earthy toned skin have the option of bold prints and patterns on green, red shades. Metallic gold can also be a great choice.
Think about body shape
Once you have decided on what colour you want to go for, it’s best to think about body shape.
Pear-shapes should try to avoid short dresses. However, A-line dresses and skirts will look fantastic. Try to avoid fuller gowns or dresses above your knees. And always wear darker shades on the lower half of your body. You could also think about a two-piece outfit.
Long prom dresses look amazing on hourglass figures, as do mermaid styles which show off curves. If you have an apple-shaped body you may want to avoid short and tight dresses. Instead, consider strapless gowns with V-neckline – although perhaps not too plunging, hey?!
Don’t forget the photo!
As much as they might not want you to, it’s so important to get the all-important photo on Prom Night. As we mentioned before, Prom is not too different from your wedding day in terms of importance at that stage of your life. You wouldn’t have a wedding without wedding photos, so Prom is no different. She’ll thank you for it one day!
Hopefully, these tips will help you and your daughter find the perfect prom dress and it will be a memory you can both treasure forever.
